Would it be an insult to say "Bottom of the Mornin' to You"?  ;D

For a moment I thought it would be a thread about morning woods.

When you wish some one the "Top of the Morning" you are wishing them the best part of the morning. To which they should reply, "and the balance of the day to you." (or some crap) This is wishing you a good rest of the day.

This particular variant is an Scottish-American version.

I woke up today with the news of SWTOR's release date.

I was dreaming about being a recon class in Battlefield 3... I was sucking it up at the beginning of the match with the bolt action sniper rifle. By the end of it, I was camping on a hill in some bushes.... I got like 8 kills in a row!

That's my top of the mornin'.

<headdesk> I know that!
I meant that the whole idea of this thread is utterly absurd.

It's a lounge thread, so it is totally valid.

For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Yes, I'd consider it an insult, but I think that's been established. However, if you wake up, and you're upside down perhaps it's a compliment?

I'm gunna leave you anyway.

I never knew there was a proper response to "Top of the mornin'".  I have learned something new today.
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

I'd assume "top" = "best" = "good"?

"Balance" = "both good and bad"? So... "Shit happens, but hope it's not too terrible?"

I assumed it was more "and all the other good bits of the day to you". Balance as in bank balance, so when someone says 'top of the morning to you' they're giving you the best bit of the morning, and when you say 'and the balance of the day to you', you're giving them all the remaining good bits of the day. Or something.

Even if you say it with a perfect Irish accent, they'll still instantly know your not Irish. It's become so overused that now NOBODY uses that phrase anymore. That was my first lesson as a tourist in Ireland; "just...never say that again alright?"

lol, bank balance?

"Top of the morning to you"
"balance of the day to you"
" top interest bless your balance"

??

Though I must admit, "HeavenO" is a much stupider greeting.

Damnit I'm supposed to be dumb right now too.

Best greeting is "G'day mate!" when it's like 6AM

I couldn't think of any other examples of when balance is actually used like that >< Though thinking about it, bank balance isn't really the same either.

I meant it's used the same way as "The balance of the profits went to him" or "He took the balance of the points", or something. It's prety archaic usage, you don't hear anyone speak like that any more, but I've definitely seen it in some old books.

People still do use it that way, and it makes perfect sense.

Edit: okay, reminds me of a some lines.

"a pleasant day to you, sir."
"good day, sir."
"god speed."
"it is a good day to die."
