Top of the Mornin' to You

--- Quote from: Tiffanys on September 24, 2011, 02:32:33 PM ---When you wish some one the "Top of the Morning" you are wishing them the best part of the morning. To which they should reply, "and the balance of the day to you." (or some crap) This is wishing you a good rest of the day.
This particular variant is an Scottish-American version.

I never knew there was a proper response to "Top of the mornin'". I have learned something new today.

I'd assume "top" = "best" = "good"?
"Balance" = "both good and bad"? So... "Shit happens, but hope it's not too terrible?"

I assumed it was more "and all the other good bits of the day to you". Balance as in bank balance, so when someone says 'top of the morning to you' they're giving you the best bit of the morning, and when you say 'and the balance of the day to you', you're giving them all the remaining good bits of the day. Or something.

Even if you say it with a perfect Irish accent, they'll still instantly know your not Irish. It's become so overused that now NOBODY uses that phrase anymore. That was my first lesson as a tourist in Ireland; "just...never say that again alright?"

lol, bank balance?
"Top of the morning to you"
"balance of the day to you"
" top interest bless your balance"
??
Though I must admit, "HeavenO" is a much stupider greeting.
