PSP Memory Card got Corrupted
« on: October 07, 2011, 05:39:33 PM »
The Memory Card is 15 GB, it used to act funny when we try to save files or load files - like the PSP keeps saying it can't find it and when we pull it out and put it back in it would load, or sometimes it won't load. The Memory Card finally got corrupted. I did a quick format on it and now its at 11 GB free disk space. There's still that 4 GB which I clearly remember that's about the size that we had before it got corrupted. How do I restore the old files? All I have is a USB port to the computer.

try checking it via partition manager, it might've gotten split and hidden. i`m using EASEUS partition manager to be precise =P

Just did. No hidden partitions and the only split partition has 10 MB based. The other 15 GB is showing as is but 4 GB is still missing. Maybe its in a hidden folder? How do I uncover this hidden folder?

That shouldn't happen at all, try using a data recovery software to shred through everything.

Is this a decent memory card? Or a cheap one?

I think I recall hearing or reading somewhere that cheap ones are actually lower sized (old) mem chips stacked/combined inside a chip. One of them may have corrupted?
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.

Can you recommend me one?

It's used, 16 GB (15 GB when showing). I did store 3-4 GB before it got corrupted, now it's only showing 11 GB for free space.

maybe its your format, did you format it to NTFS or FAT32?

FAT32. PSP doesn't recognize NTFS, or am I wrong?

consoles usually only accepts FAT32 or FAT16, i thought you formatted it into NTFS which eats a huge percentage of your free space and uses it as a table chart =(

Stop being silly kitammesume.

I use R-Studio, it's paid, but you know how to deal with that.
There are other better ones out there but I've been using this for quite some time.

Im not sure you can recover from a memory card because once the data becomes corrupted it cant be restored. Its like not a regular spin harddrive that the data is written to metal disks but I can be wrong though. Never tried to restore data from a flash drive

I had fun trying to recover data from a MicroSD card. The difference, though, was that it was internally broken in such a way that it would seem to make everything I tried hang for a few minutes and then tell me there's no card. vuzedome might remember that little incident.

If the card can be read, that's half the battle, or maybe more. Corruption may be an issue, but otherwise, deleted data can be recovered because it is not actually overwritten (until, obviously, you overwrite it). It is just marked as free space.

Tatsujin - once you're satisfied with your efforts, try doing a zero write onto the entire card (dd in Linux is the easiest way; you could also try DBAN if you're not using Linux, just make sure you don't wipe your system by accident), and then formatting again.

Side note, NTFS is a Windows format. Most non-Windows systems will not recognize it. Linux has limited NTFS implementation IIRC, but aside from that, I don't know of any system that supports it. And it sounds like someone has NTFS and FAT system formatting mixed up (koff koff). Hint: "FAT" stands for "File Allocation Table."

The reason I suggested a data recovery software is just to scan and check what's hogging up the space.

You have a controller problem. That card is no longer reliable.

As for the missing data, Don't count on it being recovered. The portion of the space where file locations are stored are probably corrupted. That is why it's no longer enumerated as used/free space.
