Minecraft: How to use a controller
luckylpf:
So because this is a small tutorial, I think it needs its own thread for ease of finding it.
How to play minecraft with a controller
So a recent change in apartment layout has caused me to be without a monitor for a brief time, which as pushed me to use my 42" plasma as a primary screen.
This causes a few problems, one of which is using a keyboard and mouse at my couch. Knowing how much I like to play minecraft this bothered me.
First a few things you need.
1.) A controller, either xbox 360, logitech rumble, or even an old saitek will work as long as it uses USB.
2.) A program called JoytoKey.
I have made a config file to use with JoytoKey using the default key bindings in minecraft.
Both can be found HERE ----> http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12089928/JoyToKey_en.zip
NOTE TO MODS, this program is free and open source.
I have set the sensitivity for the right analog stick to 75% so its fast enough that I can move around without sacrificing accuracy. Lastly I have added a 50% dead zone to both left and right analog sticks so even if your analog stick isn't perfectly centered, which happens a lot on older controllers, it will still work properly without drifting one way or another.
Quick layout for the controller using Xbox jargon.
Left analog stick - Moves character around *LS Button opens f3 tool
Right analog stick - Mouse movement *RS Button opens up the f5 3rd person view
Left trigger - crouch
Left button - list players
Right trigger - left click
Right button - right click
D pad - moves inventory
Back - full screen
Start - Escape / pause
X - No current use so I bound it to middle mouse button so I may use Team Speak while playing
Y - opens inventory
B - drops item
A - jump
This was the most comfortable layout I could produce in the hour playing it, but if you aren't happy with it you can change the layout in the config of JoytoKey.
Even if nobody but me uses this, again I thought I'd share it, now I'm off to bed :)

Not sure many people here are willing to play minecraft on their computers with a controller. When the Xbox 360 version is released... then you'll get a flood gate of people saying "OH YEAH, it so much cooler with a controller..." (manner of opinion really...)
AceHigh:
It's not a game that requires precision or quick reactions, so any controller will do. Hell you can play with a joystick and not notice much difference. But yeah I guess slacking off in a sofa is more chill than slacking off in an office chair with a mouse and keyboard.

IDK, my office chair is PRETTY nice... I can actually lean back with it.
