So I got the rough quote today for demolishing my old porch and building a new one from block, extending the roof, etc etc. The area I'm enclosing is roughly 12 feet by 32 feet, going to cost me about $12,500, materials & labor. Just putting the block in alone, and all that entails, is going to run $3500.
Looking at my finances, I decided to borrow $10,000 from my 401k to help fund the project. I figured this was probably a better choice than taking out an unsecured loan, and theoretically I can pay it back as quickly as within a year if I want. Hopefully, adding 384 square feet, more or less, will increase the value of my home enough so that when it comes time to sell, I'll recoup at least some of my investment.
