I picked up the word from biology... usually associated with atoms and cell in the subject.

So no wonder it is not used commonly.

I wouldn't say it's an uncommon word. It's just a word that's not used by 90% of English speaking Americans due to their poor education and increasing exposure to the mind-numbing, intelligence sapping television and music industries.
