Like I told Dhruv, I believe the Introduction and Returns should not be delegated to a single thread. They should be given their own sub-forum to which they can post their own introduction threads that us users can post in and welcome them. This will keep stray conversations to a minimum and allow us users to more personally welcome the newcomers without having their introduction be lost in a sea of posts afterwards and this will also allow the new users to become more familiar with the posting system as well.

Here is a quick example of what I'm talking about.

No matter what happens, stray topics will occur when all the introductions are thrown into a single thread. What I'm saying is since each new member will have their own personal introduction thread, it will encourage members to stay on the topic of the thread which is welcoming that specific member. This is how nearly every forum I'm a part of does things, so I know it's a working concept.

Take Overclock.net, for example.

It works when the person who is being introduced replies more than once. When its just the regulars taking over everywhere then it doesn't. And you guys are too fast too make EVERYTHING off topic.

Where there are dedicated forums there will be a certain amount of off-topic posts. It's an integral part of the system.

The introduction thread where it stands now is always either just below or just above the general chit chat thread. This makes it far too easy for members to bounce from chit chat to introductions when they are two very different things. Separating the Introductions to a place outside the lounge I feel is nearly guaranteed to keep off topic posting to a bare minimum. Users who want to welcome new members will check the Introduction forum every so often, and they will continue to have their chats here in the lounge. The only answer is to make them completely separate.

True. But why not attempt to solve the problem at the forum level rather than the user level?
