I don't remember my introduction, at all. But I do remember Tiyler being the first person to welcome me, and having a nice chat about his cute Shinobu avatar (me having just finished watching Bakemonogatari at the time). Ah, those were the good ol' days.
Realistically, posting anything beyond "Welcome!" is going to go off topic if it's just one thread with the topic of welcoming people. If it was a subforum where new members made their own threads, then it'd be much easier to go into more in-depth discussion ("Oh, so you're from the UK too? Whereabouts?" "Oh, I used to live in wherever but moved to somewhere because something something" "Ah yeah, I've been there a few times, something something was really interesting. What's somewhere like, I've always wanted to go there" etc etc). Whereas right now, that would be considered off-topic - even though, IMO, it should be the whole point.
Just my two pence. I don't actually care all that much though
