My mother and I also sometime get in heated arguments about these things even though we are basically two inches from each others politically. We are also both atheists.

Is it weird to have discussions like these at the dinner table? I'd say they're nearly daily for me. Whether I'm dinning with my friends or family.

IMO, dinner with family should be a time for togetherness & harmony, not a time for strife. I've had my share of arguments during the holidays; heck, the main thing I remember about the holidays as a kid was that it was the time for my family to get together and bicker. I say, fuck all that.

Discussions and arguments don't have to mean arguing. Also, it'd be a bit boring if everyone just agreed with you.

I always keep my head down when these topics come up at a family gathering, mostly because my views are different from most of the people at the table, and also because I don't think I'd be able to keep my temper in check.

I wish that'd had happened. At some point it felt like the older family member was preaching on us younger ones for our views. I'm like "who gives a damn if we disagree? Can't we just enjoy each other's company for once?" The preaching didn't stop.

Hmm, since my dad passed away over 6 yrs ago ... We don't go over to my Aunt's house (dad's sister) for Thanksgiving or Xmas much for 2 reasons ... my Aunts are getting older, mum feels uncomfortable going and parking is a bitch.
