That is weird. Why did he change his name...? Isn't that backwards?
Or is that sexist now?

I'd like to know why too. Did she have a nicer surname?

Well, he's always been a feminist, but I dunno. The name I have was made up three generations back for reasons I haven't been told, so at least he's got a "real" and a established one now.
...also, my (half-)siblings have yet another surname which they got from their father, so the only other person I know personally (there are others I haven't met) who shares my surname is my grandfather on my father's side, and as he doesn't look too good anymore...

Saras:
Tradition dictates that the wife takes up the surname of the spouse. However, there's no such requirement. It is a bit weird however, I agree.

It's easy to explain when one marries into a foreign culture thought. I doubt I'd keep my surname if I became an expat and married abroad. After all, Žukauskas would be a tongue twister to many. And it'd be weird as fuck if I got referred to it without the proper grammar, that foreigners wouldn't get.

Corunes:
In Iceland, rarely do people take the last name of their spouse, male or female. This is because you take the name of your (usually) male parent and stick 'dottir' or 'son' to the end depending on your gender. Therefore a girl named Hanna Jonsdottir is, surprise, the daughter of a guy named Jon, and her brother's last name would be Jonsson.

Not surprisingly, many an Icelander has had trouble traveling abroad with their families, since usually everyone has a different last name.

(By the way, everyone's listed in the phone book by their first names... including the Prime Minister)

If my wife had a totally kickass name, I'd change mine out without a doubt

One of my teachers in high school had the surname Thunder and his wife was Tanzen which is German for dance. We all wanted them to adopt a hybrid surname and become Thunder-Tanzen.
