I move around quite often while I'm using my laptop: My room -> living room -> dining room -> computer desk (between kitchen and living room) and it doesn't help when all the carpet has been taken out. I was holding my laptop in my arms and my external in my hand while I was walking to my room. Right before I got to my room I managed to drop it. It bounced off the ground and into the bathroom. I plugged it in to see if it still worked, and it didn't.

People have to be leeching off of you for your ratio to go up. Look around the help board, there are several threads on this topic.

Lucky it was the hard drive and not the laptop.
Maybe you should get a wireless usb hub next time, it could help prevent that kind of accidents xD

hmmm, what is the average transfer speed for a wireless one? It seems like it would be quite a bit less than wired.

This is why I move my laptop first, then cables, then USB devices (mouse, HDDs, DVD) I know I walk more, but I don't drop stuff on the way.

Yeah, it's probably slower, but idk how much. External hard drive's speeds aren't that high either, so the wireless transfer rate should be more than enough. Anyway, i never owned one, so i relly couldn't say xD
Probably the safer and cheaper way is to do as havoc says and play it safe next time. Or burn your collection into DVDs (?)

On a more serious note, man, that sucks :\ that's one of the thing s of what I'm really afraid  concerning my digital stuff. I probably would hit some people the day i wake up and my HDD fails on me.

Does anyone know of an anime-related forum that isn't hard on the eyes? Something with a light color scheme, like this forum. I would really like to join another forum, but many are so hard to look at... ah, who am i kidding. The main reason I am having so much trouble choosing one is that I am scared. I am scared of the new, scared of the unknown. I-I-I... I just want someone to choose for me.

I still don't get how you can possibly drop an external. My 4 externals have been live and healthy for years now.
