Wait, getting drunk in sauna in Finland untill you pass out? That doesn't sound so appealing, because when you'll wake up you'll be naked with slightly baked skin and brain damage in a crowd of fair haired people who speak in -tongues-.
Exactly! It's called living on the edge
Been there, done that... got told I didn't know cold until I visited her for a skinny dip Lapland (where they have to cut away the ice before you swim). Finnish is a nicer language than most in the sense it's easy to pronounce.
(AceHigh, go to Tallinn, Estonia if you want history. Seriously; A Germanic country amidst Russian/Scandinavion territory with one of the most intact castles in the world in an ex-communist nation... yeah. And now it's known for having a lot of strip clubs!)
Who do you take me for? I have been in Tallinn already. I really liked the old town, the upper town and the cheap booze over there. I would disagree that it is "germanic" in any way. Their language is finno-ugric, their culture is clearly baltic and their living blocks are regrettably Soviet blocks. If you want to see a former Germanic place in that area, visit Königsberg, which Russians call Kaliningrad. You can still find a few restored medieval buildings, that the soviets didn't completely demolish. A little piece of eastern Prussia's history and a lot of cheap booze to go with it
The language is very Germanic, as is much of the history. Suurtoll anyone? They were the first to really colonise Estonia and have left their mark, if not immediately obvious. Sadly the booze is no longer cheap, and Königsberg is on my list, but you know how awkward it is to get a Russian visa? Given the chance i'd start in Petersburg, move to Moscow. take a wander into Siberia and finish in Kalingrad, but I don't see it happening any time soon.
