Seriously? You have never heard the word or consider it rare? Never heard about defenestration? Or perhaps Defenestration. The most approved way of getting rid of bad politicians in the past.

Most Americans do not have either your or Nikkoru's level of vocabulary.  Certainly many of us haven't studied Latin.  Heck, a lot of Americans would probably point on a map to Central (Latin) America as the place of origin for the language.  I'd heard the word before, but not in many years.  It's a great word.  I mentioned it to a few co-workers this morning, and got two mildly humorous responses:
 
"Defenestrate?  Yeah, I took one of those this morning."
"I know what that word means -- it's when an attorney defends a heterosexual man."

Acronyms are another bad thing that not everyone understands or mix them up. At work we are looking at a major server upgrade and one of the salesmen for a tech company kept refering to a SAN as a NAS...big difference, it was hard for me to keep from laughing...we didn't go with their proposal.
