laptop safety...
« on: October 23, 2011, 10:02:56 AM »
hey all...
ive notice that someone is using my laptop(or maybe just my imagination)...
if you ask me, ive set the password login, but im afraid that someone already know it(the possibilities is low)
the question is, is there any method or software that can activate my laptop's webcam to record while im away?

Why don't you just change your password to some random letter-number combination? No one should know your password after that if it isn't your alter ego.

^ there is, but i dont know which to be precise.

you could setup a keylogger that records your keyboard activity and save it into a text file, then after who ever was using your laptop you'd have a clue to whom he/she is.

You could always just set up a second standalone camera nearby that keeps watch over your laptop. Like a security camera.

Get one that has motion detection. or you'll be wasting lots of space and time monitoring your inactive laptop.

I dont need a password to get into your computer. I just use mini XP to boot into your system and then change your password so I can log in. If you are worried about people using your laptop I will suggest taking your laptop everywhere you go.

Well, the truth is, im a student and dont have much money, and i live with my housemate(you know when you live with friends, they treat others things like their own)...
Thats why someone tell me if laptop webcam can record when we're away, that give me an idea to search for it...im willingly sacrifice my hdd space just to keep my laptop safe...

keylogger, and maybe mess up his facebook account or something so he/she'll freak out, though dont over do it.

have you tried setting up a bios boot password? some laptops supports passwords for stopping any type of boot-up.

You can also look at your computer's logs to see when it's been turned on/off etc, and possibly give some idea of what it was used for. Won't tell you who the person is, but knowing when they do it could help narrow down the possibilities (eg. if it happens while your housemate is at lectures, it can't be them). In Windows 7, go to control panel > administrative tools > event viewer. You'll probably mostly be interested in log entries created by "Microsoft Windows security auditing", which can mainly be found under Windows Logs (on the left) > Security.

Or, to leave your webcam recording, just use any old webcam recording software, and leave it running while you're away. Analysing several hours of footage to see if anyone appears in it would be a pain though, and that's assuming your laptop has the space for several hours of video (and the culprit doesn't see it recording and delete the video file). I can't think of any software that can do it secretly, so it might be your best option (other than the keylogger/system logs).

I'm just curious as to where this is happening, like where someone could get access to your computer with out at least having a clue as to who it would be?
