Sword of the Stars 2
« on: October 29, 2011, 06:19:23 AM »
Pc gamers won't care, after all the most hardcore CS junkies are still running CS 1.4.  :P

Speaking of looking forward to a game. I am looking forward to Sword of the Stars 2 which is downloading right now.

Wow, didn't know it was releasing now. Did you buy it and download or did you torrent it? Seems most versions on torrent sites are the beta version.

Ps, I havn't played a single of the games in the poll (except the beta of BF3). Doubt I will this year.

Reading a bit more it seems to be a beta release, even after they got the right version out.

We are all in the same situation. The developers had an insane crunch time which made the whole team stay awake for around 50 hours. In that zombie state they uploaded a beta version of the game.... twice it seems. I am not in such a rush, but there are plenty of ADHD kids who need the game right now.

However I also torrented it because it seemed like a good way to get my ratio up on bitgamer. Those suckers are still leeching it even today, still ignorant of it being the wrong version.

As far as I can tell the second version is the release version, Paradox style. Ie the paid beta version with first true release timing being the first expansion. :p

They always seem to release too early and continue development after release for longer than other companies.

Yeah, sounds right.

I wish paradox would learn a bit from Minecraft and Mount & Blade. Those 2 released an actual beta and sold that beta so they could fund further development... and the fans love them for it. It's all about honesty.

split the topic to make it a bit more on-topic ;)

as far as i can tell the only difference between the falsely uploaded "beta" version and the actual "release" version is that in the release version the options button is greyed out, as opposed to not working. and that the game crashes when i try to start a new game, as opposed to crashing once i initiate the first scan.

... *yay!*

Hmm, if it is that buggy, I guess I will wait.  All the public trackers have so many leechers now it would take days anyway.

I agree, I wonder why other companies aren't doing the paid beta thing. Valve would be able to sell keys to their current Dota 2 closed beta for ~€100 and make a profit without getting a too big rush of players (could even make it limited edition if they wanted to have an exact number of players). The full game included in that price (for anybody paying for it I hope it won't be f2p). Instead they are doing random competitions to slowly increase players, a mix would result in more money for them while still having decent publicity.

Them selling the beta keys themselves would also stop things like the $300 keys on ebay.

I also made the same post over there, looks like some people agree  ;D

Also starting my cunning plan to take over Paradox marketing team, MUHAHAHAHA!

Seems the x64 exe is more playable than the 32 bit one is for a decent portion of the players. Might be worth trying that out if you got the game. (I read the warning threads and didn't get it.)

If I try to start the 64bit version, the whole thing pretty much crashes, so does the 32bit version. Starting from mars.exe (the regular way) is what gives me a relatively stable but a buggy game with missing features.

Still lose all sounds when firing too many weapons at once.

Looks like Paradox agrees with my marketing ideas too...

It does make sense for smaller developers making large games. The revenue stream they usually get from pre-orders they instead get from people actually playing the game. Having people playing it also forces a focus to the development once in the beta phase, they simply can't keep expanding the game over fixing bugs since they have paying customers on it.

SotS 1 complete edition is on sale right now for 5,--€. I got it since I only owned part of it before (even if I've played with everything installed). http://store.steampowered.com/app/42890/ Time limited sale.

Patches are rolling out every 3 days so I guess the game will be playable soon. However the monday patch revealed just how fucked up bugs they had:

Quote
- Fixed a divide by zero crash that could occur when the game tried to trigger a rebellion on a planet with 0 civilian population.

ORLY???  ;D
