Meanwhile, because my backup drive is not spinning and whipping its heads back and forth, it has greater longevity than if it were part of a raid set churning its life away.

I'm content with that type of backup system.  It's efficient enough for me to save my important files using file synchronization.  I have no need to use raid which saves all the files including those I don't need to save.  I use less power and less material so that is good from a conservative standpoint.  Backup is done when I have the time so it occurs at my convenience.  I certainly wouldn't get raid due to being emotionally pissy about the annoyance of manually picking which files to backup.

The backup drive has partitions for each member of the family.  That reduces the chance someone would do something to the backup drive that mangles things up.  Every member of the family also has a separate 8GB thumb drive as temporary backup of files on a daily basis.  The backup hard drive is for those more "permanent" formal backup occasions.  With this approach, nothing bad has happened and the costs of implementation are low as is the costs of operation.  This method works for us and requires not much effort or cost.

tried the net, couldnt find any datasheets.

i found it lying around some boxes in the stockroom, so far what i know about it is its a 10KRPM server drive.

^ datasheet, data+sheet, not google+sellers.

i got 4 of them, and i dunno which SCSI connectors it uses, which era its from and what it's rated speed.

You can still find out that it is 10kRPM, 146GB, FC drive.

^ yea but counting the pins its a 40pin ??? type SCSI connector that hell outa giving me headaches just to identify it.

the 146GB was already written on the HDDs and so is the 10KRPM but nothing else, Hitachi seems to have removed the HDD's datasheet from their websites -.-

So try calling Hitachi customer service and start asking? They tend to be fine digging through their records for that stuff as they do keep them for IT reasons.

Can you post a picture?

AFAIK, SCSI connectors are 50 pin (looks like a slightly bigger IDE connector), 68 pin and 80 pin.

@charredchar, already sent a ticket requesting a PDF datasheet.

@pentium100, ok.
the drive looks exactly like this

it might not have been an SCSI connector but some comments around other sites says so.
pin count is exactly 20 on each side.

It may require a proprietary backplane.

The only information you need is in those buy links. As posted earlier, it's an Fiber Channel HDD. 40-pin. I guess it's too hard for you to actually click on search results.

ok thanks for clearing up the connector problem, now the only things left to find out is the seek time, sustained read/write, random read/write, etc.

layman's term, how much of a difference does it have between a normal consumer HDD, because if it doesn't have much of a difference, might as well sell it for as much as the other's prices, i.e. 40$-100$

edit: i received hitachi's reply, they dont have any drives with a model of dkr2e-j14fc... conclusion is to junk it and just sell it.

Since I didn't want to create a new topic and this concern's WD HDD I am gonna post here.

I might be getting a new external WD External HDD Elements Desktop (2.5TB). Now before I move all my stuff into my new external HDD, I want to know if there are stuff I should do, i.e. check for warranty(since they count from date of manufacture and not purchase) and checking for disk error's and stuff.

Well let me know what are the things to do.

Also I have done my research on HDD's and this is more than enough (since I don't have USB 3.0 and will be while till I get it and price is my main concern (gonna cost me ~$117)).

So there you go, that's all.

^ you could try filling it up to it's brim and check if it'll cause an error or breakdown, if its stable then you can conclude that every sector is working fine.

that reminded me, about 2weeks i bought a 1TB WD External HDD "My Passport essential SE" for about 130$. seems like the price haven't gone down much at all as of now, Christmas sales didn't affect it the slightest.

Don't expect the prices to drop over night. Even if the supply for parts is restored the price will slowly drop or may not drop as long as they were. Companies were be undercutting each other to make the highest profitable sale. The prices you see now may be the "new" price range for HDDs.

Well, prices are starting to drop, so it probably won't be quite the new price range. Definitely won't be overnight, though, of course.

i wasn't saying it'll drop overnight, rather its been two months and december sales didn't affect it, usually you'd see some go 10% off or something but none did. though i saw a couple of galaxy tabs gone berserk @ 50% off, must be the old models i presume.

Well got my external HDD just now. Cost me $117 for 2.5TB (original price $212). The HDD prices here are still high. The 1TB version of the HDD I bought still cost's $144. Such a nice discount that was.  :)
