Who goes to what conventions and where?
« on: October 31, 2011, 09:56:57 PM »
Sometimes it is difficult to know of Anime/Japanese events that go on around you or outside your own area.

I live in southern middle TN and I usually go to Anime Weekend in Atlanta (AWA) every year or every other at least. It is usually the last weekend in Sept. I have been going to that one since AWA 6 or 7 I think which would have been around 2000-2002.

There is actually a convention much closer in Nashville that I have never made it to.
Middle Tennessee Anime Convention (MTAC) has been going on for 4 or 5 years and I just never make it.

I just wanted to see what and where else things are going on. Also my experiences with conventions is it is more fun with a group of people you know or kinda know. Maybe if there are convention goers we could meet up etc. Or is we make a list maybe someone that doesn't know about the conventions in their area will catch one.

Used to go to A-Kon in Dallas, TX every year.

Don't care for them too much anymore. I want doujinshi, cons don't satisfy this. Also find it very hard to find anyone else interested in any of the same stuff, Everyone seems to just be interested in funimation stuff. Vendor area was OK, but I could have bought cheaper, even limited editions of galge for less through deputy service. I don't know, after so much internet a con feels like a trip back to pre-2005. A pilgrimage to comiket/akiba must be made someday.

I can understand how it seems everyone is obsessed with what just hit stateside or is airing on a cable channel. At AWA there were WAY too many Naruto's and L cosplayers when Naruto and Deathnote were airing.

Don't just assume that you are right. Verify with the best tools available and if you are wrong, change your mind and you will become right.

I don't think there are any conventions in my small redneck Canadian mountain town. I'd probably have to drive down to Seattle or something, and that wouldn't really be worth it. Besides, I hear that there's a lot of weirdos at those conventions :x

Kind of wondering if any cons in my state are actually WORTH going to. Cali is way more populated than Texas, and there are many people here who speak asian languages, so it seems like it could have some potential to be a bit different, but will it? Is it just going to be another downer with a combination of huge lines, traffic jams, and naruto/bleach fans flooding the place?

Naruto, Bleach, and Deathnote were all super present last year at AWA(2010). But they did do video rooms and especially if they do brand new just showing in Japan series you can find some interesting things or one off OVA's. I first found Welcome to the NHK, Irresponsible Captain Tylor and a few others in video rooms. AWA though recently incorporated into an actually company that runs it. And with such are more easily open to being sued. So they no longer show fan subs or anything unless they get it from a US distributor. They usually show stuff that hasnt been released yet but it isnt the same.

I only go to a local convention called D-Con as I can't really afford to go elsewhere. ^^;

It's okay I guess theres never really any super special guests but it's always a load of fun to go especially with a bunch of friends.

I just attended EirtaKon this weekend for the third time.

In August there's Nom-Con as well, but I never usually have any money to spare by that time of year. Hopefully I will this year, though. :D
