What sort of things do you want to learn?
« on: November 13, 2011, 01:29:36 PM »
There are things in life that, in one point, will make you say "I want to learn how to do that!" or "I will do that someday". Due to excessive dreaming, I have formed a list of things I wanted to learn. These are things that I think will make me look either of the following: Awesome, Cooler, Smarter, Nerdier, Sexier, or just plain epic useful.

1.) Photography - I bought an Entry-Level DSLR and occasionally buy a Photography Magazine.

2) Drawing - I downloaded tons of book for drawing to get started. I also bought a notebook for my crappy sketches

3) Playing the Guitar - I bought 4 guitars which broke in a period of 4 years. I know the basics and a few songs.

4) Playing the Piano - My uncle gave me his long unused keyboard. Some of the keys don't respond
 Sub-section: Drums, Bass, Dubstep-making,

5) Game Programming - I started C++ a while back. I gave up because of my studies.

6) Computer Graphics - I bought a pen tablet! :)

7) Dancing - I'm fat and I can't move my body really well.

8) Losing weight - I'm 70 kg and 5 feet 6 inches in height.

9) Speaking any other language - I am a Filipino. I know Filipino, English. a tad bit of Japanese.

10) Making Electronics - Isn't it cool to make your own thing-a-mabobs?

11) Music Making - I love singing. Unfortunately, the love isn't mutual.

12) Being really good at arcade games - DDR, DJMAX Technika, Tekken. I suck in all of those.

13) Building my own Gaming Computer - Yeah. I will try it as soon as I get my first paycheck. Which I will have after I got my first paying job. Which I plan on taking after I graduate college. Which will take a very long time.

14) Parkouring - Without the nut hits and injuries, It would be just plain awesome.

15) Animating - 3d or 2d. I want it :)

16) Be an EFFIN rich man - Living on your own mansion on a private island is the dream. And don't forget the maids and butlers ;P

17) Making an Operating System - Yeah.

18) Be an unbeatable champion at all any sport - Basketball, bowling, Ice hockey, Volleyball, Boxing

19) Be an Engineer - I took up an Industrial Engineering course and I'm loving it. I am now in danger of being kicked out of a very good Technical school.
Sub-section: Doctor, Pilot, Physicist, Astronaut, Actor

20) Be LEGENDARY at all games - The feeling of being a top-ranker at all games intrigues me.

21) Lead a country and be awesome at it - This says it all.

22) Forge my own sword

23) Mixing my own cocktail - I don't drink BTW. I just think its cool.

There are other things such as inventing the time machine, reanimating the dead and Flying. But those are plain fantasies (as of November 13, 2011, if reanimating the dead is possible in the future, please don't forget me).

Anyway, I wonder if any of you feel the same thing.

TL:DR ver. Post your dreams.

Some of yours would be on my list as well.

1) Learn how to use my camera better. (I've had a DSLR for a year now and can take an okay photo, but I would like to read up on how to technically take a better one as at the moment I'm playing it by eye)

2) Learn another language. I'm trying for Japanese, as a lot of people around here do.

3) Learn to code websites better. Being a designer it's a really useful skill to have.

4) Learn to sew clothes. I can follow a simple pattern but I would like to actually improve my sewing skills enough to make some clothes I could wear out and about.

5) Learn to cook more dishes. This one I'm always pursuing and the guys and gals on IRC often get to hear about my latest culinary adventure.

6) Animate something by hand. I have great respect for the animators of old and would love to animate something completely by hand. I've tried stop motion and using After Effects to animate with so far.

As for something that's a dream and not so much something I want to learn- I want to have my work featured in illustration annuals. I should hopefully have some work in a book about Futures next year and a magazine in a few months, but I want to have people approach me because they love my work and want it to be in their annual.

I'd also love for some university students in years to come to use me as part of their dissertations/research for work. I'd probably never know about it but it'd sure be cool

LOL, at least you have ambition!

My current dreams:

1) Learn to play guitar solos at around 200bpm.  (I'm never gonna reach this one, I'm too damned old to teach my fingers to move that fast, but I'm having fun learning.)

2) Write & publish one or more fantasy novels.  This is a dream I periodically revisit.  I've had this ambition literally since I could pick up a pencil.  I have all of the technical knowledge to write a fully-realized novel, but I lack the self-discipline to follow through, and I can't settle on what in the hell I want to write.

3) Pay off my house, sell it, and move somewhere where I don't have a lawn to take care of.  Maybe buy a condo instead.  I'm at the halfway point to paying off my house, only got 6 years to go!

4) Retire from work.  That's at least 25, maybe 30 years away, though.

5) Go back to Japan, spend more time in Tokyo, Kamakura, and Yokohama.  Go to Kyoto and maybe Osaka.  Planning to do this next year if my friends are available to go!

6) Learn more Japanese.  I'm not serious about it, but I dink around with Rosetta Stone every so often.

7) Win the Lottery, build a big ass house with a gaming room, theater room, and a fully stocked bar.  (The alcohol wouldn't last around my friends, though; I'd be lucky not to come home one day and find my friends' corpses piled up in front of the liquor cabinet.)

It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

  • Learn Japanese - I'm sure that's something most people on this forum want to learn. Just knowing enough to read raw of Yotsubato would be nice.
  • Become a DJ - I've already got the basics down. Just needa fork out a metric crap ton of money for the equipment.
  • Draw (decently) - Would love to be able to draw as well as someone like Emperpep
  • Eat melon bread - Shana makes it look tasty

That's about it...

Yeah I don't have high aspirations.

I think most of us will have at least an item in common of things we want to learn/dream. There are also times where I can't decide whether I choose one thing to learn and sacrifice the other. For example, If I make it to be an Engineer. I am pretty sure I can't become a Doctor/Physician someday.

We make dreams come true. And I love that fact. Humans strive to do their best perhaps to become the best and rule (as an instinct). However, Time is limited and life is short to do all these things awesomely. The only thing we can do is excel on one aspect and make the rest a hobby.

Out of the Blue: I wish the human brain has an SD slot. Where you can install applications to an SD card and learn it instantly. Memorizing a poem as easy as a click and drag. Learning how to drive by installing an application. Never forget all the things that your father/mother/GF/Wife told you to do. Memorizing and studying formulas for a test will be a breeze.

1 - Learn the right answers to all the questions. (know what to say at the right time)
Don't you get the feeling that if you answer in a "certain way" certain doors will open?

2 - What my boss is thinking (and some of my co-workers) - seeing that my boss and my co-workers at the lab already act like I can do that...

3 - To be "The Man"

4 - To know what kanji are written in Suika Ibuki's Gourd, and what do they mean. I've already posted that but nobody has answered yet.

5 - How to be funny (I know I'm doing it wrong)

6 - The Meaning of Life

7 - Gnosis

Become fluent in Arabic, Spanish and Russian
Regain my lost skill and conditioning
Be rich enough to not give a shit about others
Take a few years off and go traveling all around the world before setting down and starting a family-.

First three I think I can achieve no problem but the fourth one is troublesome. Getting a few years off is really not that easy in the modern day and age.
* JoonasTo  sighs.

Because we can!

I play guitar but would love to pick it up more often. I was in a couple of bands as a kid (if you really want a giggle, this was the more successful of the two bands, I was asked to play rhythm until they found a better replacement). I've dabbled, written a few songs (never recorded), learnt some other stuff, but never find the time to fit it in. I've contemplated taking my guitar to work with me and just playing something, but I keep getting asked to teach customers kids to play and I really cba. I got enough of that at uni; teaching kids to play "White Stripes" and "Nirvana" until I wanted to bang my head against something hard...

Ixarku: Learn to sweep. It will take you a few months but its a good trick to play quickly. Katsu Ohta is older than you and...well watch. Minimal movement needed. Alternatively, tapping is good. Few people play really quickly via conventional methods, these techniques just make it easier. Playing quickly is only part of it, the songs with tonnes of movement up and down the board, or with strange timings, may not be the fastest tracks but are far harder imo.

I built a gaming computer but rarely game on it amusingly.

I've done parkour, went out with a friend every so often (he was actually in a docu about it back when it first hit the mainstream eye) but got scared shitless when I saw him jump between roofs and stuff :/

I was once ranked in the top 10 hunters for a game I used to play, led a number of guilds and became infamous for starting a year long feud between two guilds/alliances with a total of ~150 players. Just so they would both stop attacking my small band of brigands.

I'm a certified Engineer.

I've made many a cocktail. Most of them awful. The lesson? Don't get too ambitious with it. Just because you have both peach schnappes and rum in the cupboard doesn't mean they should be mixed.

My own intentions involve:

1) Getting a better job/career
2) Finding the time to get back to guitar
3) To continue my travelling exploits (5 countries in 18 months, and next week I hit a 6th with plans already for a 7th and 8th \o/)
4) To somehow find the time to watch everything on my hard drive (HAHAHAHAHA)
5) And perhaps most importantly, not fuck up my current relationship for stupid reasons.

Except for my overall goal of always trying to do the best at what ever I attempt...
I try and keep things pretty realistic. There are a million and one things I would Love to at least attempt, but in the real world I keep the list short to things Id like to keep doing and most likely enjoy. I try and keep in mind how the Japanese can be, devoting their entire life to one specific thing and the perfection of that task.

I want to eventually do some blacksmithing, because of which I have already taught myself how to weld and have done some basic metal fabrication.
I messed around with a harmonica when I was much younger and would like to get serious with it, I already have one on Amazon waiting for me to order it.  ;D
Learn a new language. Not sure which though, German, Japanese, Russian, or Chinese are at the top of the list.
I would like to become a better track driver, though Im pretty sure its already too late to do it professionally.

Everything else is just one form or another at getting better of what I already do. Automotive, science, electronics, etc.
I can pretty much do anything with a car, short of having the money or tools.
I can pretty easily put together a computer system/network, though I HATE dealing with software which is why I never went into IT.
Make sure to keep myself fit enough to not have to struggle to do anything such as heavy lifting or running.
Spent a couple years with parkour around 04/05 until I got bored of it. This city just isnt dense enough for such a thing.

5) To become taller than my step-dad (he's 6' 4", I'm barely 6')
6) To completely understand the human mind

Shit I'm Watching | Quite frankly, I don't give a fuck.
