A person who I happened to be acquainted with through a friend participates in the local tennis association as a teacher for youngsters and as an under-35 recreational competitor. He's one of those young overly-fit people you see playing at courts when you happen to be driving past them on your way to eat fast food in an air conditioned venue that smells of grease. He's got a nice racket, knows how to play, and even has proper tennis outfits to do it in. His pairs partner's wife was busy giving birth or something, so he couldn't come. His usual substitute was my friend, who claims he was busy with work -- though I suspect this to be a lie since he's never busy with work or anything really. So I was asked, apparently out of nihilistic fatalism more than genuine hope.

I thought "what the hell, it doesn't look that hard, and I think I played when I was 7 or 8 anyways."

Apparently, I'm good at tennis. This comes as something of a hilarious surprise to me given my complete apathy about the sport,  my utter lack of practice at anything tennis-like, and general limited physical prowess at much of anything athletic. Even if my competitors were majorly weak (I have no concept on the matter), they must've spent money on lessons and equipment which puts them far ahead of me.

I was just swatting at it unthinkingly, and it went where I wanted it to. We won 2 out of 3 matches, though the first match was something of wash since I kept serving into the net

Still, it was less annoying than Wii-tennis. I was somewhat disappointed that it was nothing like Prince of Tennis, no cool special-shots or serves or nuthin'.

Haha, great story. (no sarcasm, i promise D:) Let me ask you a question, does your newly realized natural tennis prowess mean your less apathetic about the sport? Does it spark an interest at all, or does being good at something have nothing to do with your interest in it?

Wow, I cannot believe I haven't done this yet... I feel so unaccomplished now.

If I never play again I'd be perfectly contented. Maybe it's more fun with singles, but the better you play the less fun you actually have with sports like this.

It's kinda like fighting video games, where you memorize all the special moves and just use them over and over again. You might win every time, but all you're doing is rhythmic button pressing. I kept hitting the corners repeatedly, and things were done before I even perspired much.

Well, it would probably get harder if I played more, but there are better ways to relieve tension and exercise than that.
