And that article. Tbh it's nothing new and scientist are aware that life could exist that hasn't evolved the way it did on Earth. The problem they face though: How to detect such life if you have not really made a definition on what life is and the knowledge so far about carbon-based organisms can't be transferred so easily.

You forgot Sulfur, Phosphorus and Chlorine. Others are counted to the lot as well, albeit much rarer.

And not completely. Only certain certain carbon compounds are counted as Organic. Diamonds aren't even thought they are carbon based.

Burkingam:
I wouldn't worry about metal-based life taking over the world. There is a reason why our life form is based on carbon hydrogen and oxygen. They are among the most common elements in the universe. If someone creates life from metal, the new life form will soon start to lack raw material to consume.

And the very idea of a metal based life form eating carbon based life is silly. We are what we eat after all.

You guys read too much science fiction.

bork:
Carbon based chemistry can from long complex compounds that are easy to store energy into and release, and for organic life a method of storing information.  Silicon is a close second to carbon in forming complex compounds but it is more difficult to use in storing energy.  Energy storage that I talk about is the ability to use a energy input, light, and force the bonding of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon to form sugars.

They might of formed some structures that mimic things found in nature but there will be the replication problem that needs to be worked out and the need of some way of gathering and storing a fuel to run this "engine".  For it form complex life forms in a repeatable/reliable way there will need to be something that will store a master plan to build it, like what DNA does for organic life.

Organic chemistry (playing with just oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon), is like playing with the ultimate tinker toy set.  It is unlimited in the ways these three can combine.

Thanks for the info, that was a rather decent OVA (I would rate it "average")
