Can't say I've even seen them before now, I've only started using the site recently. And yes, odds of using the same render are pretty high if you just search (anime name) + christmas + render for your images.

okay, i admit this one fails big time. i had to cover shoe with something (the rest of his head is offscreen). wish i knew how to make that "bulletin board/scrapbook" effect. $:-\$ would have gone with that instead. got any tuts for it, people?

I agree, most of the banners shown by new members are pretty much fail and without imagination.

Mine isn't the best but at least not a copycat or anything like it. Most likely because I used a fresh image instead of 3 years old pictures.

Sorry but I've just flicked through the pools for the magazines surrounding this year's holiday period and there are like maybe 4 holiday/wintery images to be used (including that Ika) . You can't blame people for using older images that have been unsurprisingly used before.
And personally, I'd like to do better than 'shopping a hat onto regular stock.

Interestingly enough I found 47 winter/holiday images of Ika Musume this year when I was looking for sources.
