Me vs uTorrent 3.0
« on: December 04, 2011, 11:13:06 PM »
Today, I decided to upgrade my awesome uTorrent 2.2 to make use of the new remote option. (https://remote.utorrent.com/). It's pretty neat and works magic with the android app and well enough with the iPhone's Browser. You guys should check it out.

Anyhow, since I'll be wanting to add torrents from anywhere now, I started adding every RSS I use to uTorrent, maybe set a few auto-downloads here and there. The first problem arose : automatic RSS downloads won't use the correct Label I've assigned them in its settings. My reaction? Of course I'd want to remove that particular label named nyaaTorrent... right-click the nyaaTorrent label in the category tab... click remove... Boom, uTorrent removed every single one of my 791 torrents and my 60+ labels.

No matter what you do, if you're pretty much using uTorrent as an anime Browser like me and making full use of the labels, don't mess around with uTorrent 3.0, because you'll also have to replace your mouse. Used Azureus since its debut until it got renamed Vuze and became crap, then went to uTorrent without ever looking back... Now I'm heartbroken.

Anyone else with problems with uTorrent? Or if you have a good browsing system to share (not WMC)... Yoroshiku onegai shimasu ;)

I use uT 1.8.5 and 2.2.1 (on different computers) and have no problems, well, other than the fact that I cannot use more than ~1.5GB as cache, since if the uT process hits 2GB memory usage it crashes (because it is a 32bit process and does not use AWE, which would allow 32bit processes to access more than 4GB RAM).
Other than that, uT is very stable, does not use a lot of CPU, so it's good enough for me.

Also, if I wanted remote access, I would use something else. I'm planning to buy a Viliv N5 or a similar device (has to be x86 and have a decent keyboard, basically, a modern Psion Series 5, but also with x86), then I will be able to VPN to my network and use radmin.

if you haven't opened and closed your utorrent repeatedly there is a good chance there is still a backup of your setting before you removed all that stuff in the utorrent settings folder.

That sounds pretty clever.  It had never occurred to me to make my uTorrent cache that large in order to remove most of the hard drive accesses.  What time intervals do you use to force writes of the cache to hard drive?

lol wut? i dont have any problems with 3.0's labeling, just deselect the label by "right-click->left-click the checked label".

"Write out untouched blocks every 2 minutes"
"Write out finished pieces immediately"

I seed a lot of torrents (but do not download a lot), so a large cache (1280MB on one server, 1024MB on another) helps. The first server has ~6GB RAM, I could make the cache even bigger, if uT could use more than 2GB memory on 32bit systems. The second only has 2GB, but it is a 64bit system, so I could add more RAM and get a 64bit version of uT, hopefully there is a stable 64bit version, I have not checked.

^LOL i think im misunderstanding you.

your server with 6GB has a 32bit os while the 64bit system only has 2GB?

If you're on Vista or 7, you could restore an older resume.dat with the following:

Yes, the 6GB server has 32bit CPUs, so it cannot run a 64bit OS.
The 2GB server has 64bit CPUs, so it can run 64bit OS, so I am using it, in case I want to use a 64bit program and/or add more RAM (2GB is enough for now).

And the 6GB server uses SDR, while the 2GB server uses DDR, so I cannot move RAM between them.

Im running 2.2 on my server (two of them, actually) since it came out. I actually had 2.0 before that and as soon as I went to 2.2 I regretted it and decided to never upgrade it again. Every time they do it messed with previous things, such as Remote Access. I have to create an account to remote into my own computer that hosts its own webserver? I dont think so... Even more annoying, since they did that remote crap I cant find an android app that uses the older remote system like I had on my iPhone.

I got use to most of the changes from 2.0 to 2.2. For the most part it was just visual changes and their dumb apps that I dont use anyway. I also had an issue with running two clients after updating but since found a work around. I generally try and keep Everything up to date, but uTorrent just doesnt seem worth doing that with. More so because I have it set up how I like on a server PC. Even worse it seems uTorrent is slowing becoming more bloated, even though they still have one of the smallest footprints on a system it still keeps growing between updates.
