Picking a UMPC/PDA/MID/etc
« on: December 11, 2011, 07:07:03 AM »
Hi, I decided that instead of looking for another smartphone to replace my Nokia N93, I should buy a UMPC that I could carry anywhere. I tried googling and found some models, but I'd like to hear (read) your suggestions too. I know these things are not very popular (compared to tablets or smartphones), but maybe some of you have one or know something about them.

My requirements for the device would be:
1. x86 CPU and the ability to run desktop Windows - no Android, Symbian or other closed platforms with no backward compatibility.
2. A decent keyboard, preferably one that I could use with my both bands.
3. About 17 x 9 cm size, that is, size similar to Psion Series 5.

I would prefer if the device also had:
1. At least one USB port (strongly preferred)
2. 1GB or more RAM.
3. VGA and/or TV (composite or s-video) output.
4. An internal compartment for the stylus.
5. Battery life of at least 4 hours.
6. Integrated 3G modem.
7. Screen resolution at least 1024x600.

It would also be great if the device could also function as a phone, but I probably shouldn't want too much :)

Anyway, here's what I found so far:
PsiXpda
(click to show/hide)

Viliv N5
(click to show/hide)

UMID BZ
Basically the same as the N5, but with a bit lower build quality, smaller keyboard, 512MB RAM (instead of 1GB) and a VGA output.

Fujitsu F-07C
This one can function as a phone too. However, it can only run for ~2 hours in Windows-mode and the phone functions do not quite work there. It also does not have USB ports, but needs a docking station to get them (and a HDMI port)

If only these are available, then I will most likely buy a Viliv N5 (with 32GB, GPS and probably 3G).

Did I miss anything?

Well, these devices were called a lot of names, hence the thread title. As for the CPU, it's interesting, but so far I only found the devices that have Atom.

if amd's APUs makes a move on these devices they'd dominate the section, doubt about the price tho.

What's that?

Well, depends on the game I guess. The N5 has a 1.1GHz Atom CPU and 1GB of DDR2 RAM, but the GMA500 video adapter is not really suited for 3D (it can decode video though). After all, these devices use only a few watts of power, so you shouldn't expect good 3D performance.

plant vs zombies, it could run on a pentium4 1ghz with a legacy on-board so it should be able to run, but i don't think those tablet's OSes would support it though. no idea about the win7 os.

Well, the N5 can run XP (and the PsiXpda and UMID BZ come with XP by default). The game would probably run on 7 too, after all, this is normal Windows 7, not Windows Phone 7.
