Any JRPGs for PC?
« on: December 29, 2011, 05:03:56 PM »
Same deal as with the flight "sim" thread. I'm looking for a JRPG while games are on sale. I'd rather not use an emulator (I can't get the PS2 emulator to work).

[edit] No one has suggested any of those RPG maker games, and unless its absolutely fantastic and JRPGish please don't.

You'd be hard pressed to find a jrpg for PC. The only one I know of is The Last Remnant.

FF7 is on PC? It would probably be harder to find a copy of that than to find another JRPG besides that and The Last Remnant. XD

Which was a shitty console port.

I wonder what Japanese have against computers...
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

It's probably because they know jrpgs wouldn't sell too great on the PC.

Yeah, I knew about Last Remnant already, and that I probably don't want to play it. I haven't played a JRPG in a very long time. Well, no good ones at least. My brother was kind enough to pre-order FF XIII for me with the expectation that (1) I would pay him back and (2) getting to play as well, all while forgetting that I don't buy full priced games.

FF XIII isn't what I would call a good JRPG or even a good game... just pretty and shiny.

I meant more in the direction of why Japanese people seem to reject PC as a gaming platform, when in contrast their neighbours S.Korea have adopted Starcraft which is a PC game almost as a national sport.

I wonder if its some kind of national loyalty. When computers and gaming systems came out TVs and gaming systems were made in Japan where as the PC and its stuff was American. As a result they wanted to buy Japanese goods for both nationalistic and economic reasons. (thats whats I've assumed all these years at least.)

Oddly enough, I just found this while organizing stuff a few days ago.

There are three problems with FF VII and VIII.

1) I've gotten too use to not switching out disks.
2) I don't like the price tag that comes with those games.
3) a 640x480 image on a 1920x1200 monitor = fail

[edit] I can play Planescape on my monitor, but it was cheap, I don't have to switch out disks, and the resolution, even without mods, is higher. Also Morte is a far better character than the entire cast of those two games put together, and he isn't even a whole character (not to mention there are others)!

Anachronox, even though is not Japanese made, has a JRPG style, and I think, being based on the Quake II engine, allows higher resolutions. The only problem, in my view, is that the focus is a lot more on adventure/quest type elements and less on turn-based combat. I also found the part that I played (I didn't finish it) to have many amusing elements and nice voice acting.

There's also a PC port of the second in a cycle of at least 3 PS2 JRPGs, the name of which I just can't remember, but I wouldn't recommend anyway since it was quite boring. Edit: it was Grandia 2.

Also, I think Breath of Fire of Fire IV was ported to the PC, but I never played that.

The Last Remnant wasn't so bad, but the grinding for higher level weapon upgrades was insane.

Grandia II is too expensive, and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter was never ported  :'(

Have you ever tried looking for free ones? Free MMOs are obviously easy to find. I'm wondering if there's some free JPRGS or similar online somewhere. Browsing through steam might yield something interesting as well.
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.

Uh, there are tons of JRPGs on the PC. They just never got released in the west.

Aselia got released recently, though: http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/Aselia_the_Eternal/index.html

And you have a lot of Action RPGs like the Ys series.

I'm also interested in finding more PC jrpgs, here's what I found so far:

Heroine anthem series (no known translation)
Rance series (especially sengoku rance, hentai/jrpg types are fun)
Recettear, chantelise (recettear is better)
Utawarerumono (it has a translated jrpg tactics game)
Magna carta (partially translated)
Cross hermit (no known translation)
Langrisser series, growlanser (no known translation)
Bravesoul (hentai rpg)
Ys series (some of it are translated)
Castle fantasia series (I think Castle Fantasia 2 has translation)
Hundred swords (translated)
Cosmology of kyoto (weird)

edit: I didn't include JRPG games you can play on emus, which there are plenty of. (I'm currently replaying Front Mission 3 for PSX and Makai Kingdom for PS2)

edit:
I wonder if its some kind of national loyalty. When computers and gaming systems came out TVs and gaming systems were made in Japan where as the PC and its stuff was American. Intriguing perspective. I never really thought that gaming could actually be affected by some sort of quasi geopolitics.
This sort of explains why even some techie japs eschew the practicality of a PC over it's juvenile console version of a gaming platform, since a console is practically like a laptop/PC with it's other useful utilities willingly tied behind it's back.

ie: You can't use the same console to run softwares you use for work & play. You can't use your console to mod and make mods for your games. You don't get a mouse and keyboard and you have to play most FPS games with auto-aim like a noob (lol). You don't get to play decent RTS games on consoles either. You also don't get to easily upgrade parts for your consoles.

It's like playing around in an enclosed playground while you're being watched by goofy authoritarian P.T. Barnum type overlords trying to quantify your 'fun factor' in the most profitable way possible.. >_>
