Actually, the Powerpuff Girls was reasonably intelligent - as a parody of old-school Sci-Fi and superhero cartoons - it's references and humour were fairly subtle and often beyond the grasp of the target audience.. All of which was lost in the anime version.

Fairly subtle if you happen to think PPG was for lil' girls. Though even still, there are more skillfully hidden references available for a keen observer, it's a treasure trove of pop-culture.
Hanna-Barbera Productions are always like that, though whether I find it entertaining is another issue altogether. I seem to recall enjoying Dexter's Lab quite a bit, but I was always iffy about the PPGs because they're often quite dry.
