After cleaning the scanner, the software that came with the scanner should have a calibration function, that you use with a blank sheet of paper, which the scanner uses to eliminate any blemishes from the scanned image.

If you have dusty air, it is possible some of the dust gets inside the scanner and deposits itself on the backside of the glass.   If that happens, there's nothing else to do but clean that off.

You have not mentioned what scanner or what object you are scanning.  If the object being scanned has a rough surface and there is printing on the OTHER side of the paper, then parts of the other side could show through at spots where the paper is thinnest.

I usually scan my drawings that I draw on one side; and I know that lines from the other side of the paper would appear, so I normally don't scan drawings which I draw on both sides. I use an all-in-one HP deskjet o.o

The reason why lines appear from the other side is because the light shines through the paper and then bounces back from the white background of the scanning cover.  The drawing on the other side is then displayed as a shadow.  To prevent the lines from the other side from showing, put something dark between the picture being scanned and the white background of the scanning cover.

That's what he said. :'(. Light goes from bottom of scanner through paper. The drawing has shadow on the other side that it sees.  (That is how I understood what he said )

Unless I'm severely misreading then it's almost certainly about drawings on both side.

Fixing it would probably be a nicer thing to do. :P

Any chance we can get an example of these random dots?

The way I read it was like this. He talks about the light shining through the paper and going to the other side. (The drawing is the red line on the scanner)

Since the light shined through the paper the focus is on the other side. (blue). So the shadow on the "other side" is really the shadow from the drawing.

That was how I read it and it makes the most sense to me that way.  I have trouble reading it as two-sides. My brain doesn't like it that way. :-\.

Right. To try and clear things up. OP, these images are single sided aren't they?

Have you tried scanning a fresh piece of white paper?

I take it that's the scanner I can see at the bottom. There's spots on that and no paper there so it couldn't be shadows from the paper. Perhaps dust as AnimeJanai mentioned earlier?

The dots remind me of the effect of skin flakes on a scanner's mirror.  If your scanner has a mirror, see if there is dust on it.

Dust can be removed by using canned air to blow the dust off, or one of those non-scratching non-residue dusting brushed used to brush clean camera lenses could be used.  My wife bought an extra cosmetic brush for me to use as they are soft and non-scratching and cheap.  I store it in a ziplock bag to keep it clean between uses.
