Author Topic: How to 'delete' Internet Explorer and block Firefox? (Read 1707 times)

hey all~
now that i have new desktop, i wanna ask if anybody know how to do the above question...

first, let me explain it...
for internet explorer, yeah i want to remove it/completely disable it...

for firefox, i want to block all access to website except whitelist (talking about Procon Latte), but it seems that i cant configure i well...
for example, i wanna add http://www.mudah.my/Sarawak/for-sale to the whitelist and as my homepage...
then, i select block all site except whitelist...when try to search in the above site, it is block and afaik, procon latte doesnt block anything related to whitelist only...
atm, still trying to figure out this...

For the first part, you can never fully uninstall Internet explorer.
But to remove it go to Programs and Features in control panel, then click on the “Turn Windows features on or off” link on the left side.

The Windows Features screen opens up and here you want to uncheck the box next to Internet Explorer 8.
You may need to restart computer afterwards.

For the second part, I'm sure some parental control program can do it easily, but I can't help you there.

You can customize where your computer directs domains and ip addresses in your hosts file. This is actually how people create blacklists of add site domains and other somewhat malicious sites. Google how to make the internet suck less and go to the someonewhocares domain. this is a good example of what to put into your own hosts file.

You can also look into access control lists (or ACLs). I'm really not sure why you would want an internet whitelist... Why do you want an internet whitelist?

And as for getting rid of IE just disable it/change all file types and programs to run in Firefox instead of IE. Problem solved.

You can remove Internet Explorer, but then there will be a bunch of other programs that will not function properly, so don't attempt it.

It could be a public computer for a business and only wants customers to access one site.

I have internet explorer disabled on my computer and I haven't noticed any problems. Sometimes a program will force open ie instead of my system default chrome, but I haven't had anything not open or crash as a result of disabling ie.

Disable is somewhat different from remove; if you had removed it I imagine the programs that forced it open would have gone berserk.

Or stopped responding. Almost the same thing.

Most firewalls should be able to implement some kind of whitelist. COMODO Internet Security, for example, which is what I use, allows you to set custom rules - so you just create a rule saying "block all access from [any] to [any]", and then add new rules saying "allow access from [this pc] to [whatever website]". One for each hostname. You can password-protect the settings too, to make sure nobody else changes it.

It's a bit cumbersome (at least in COMODO), so I wouldn't advise it if you want lots of sites on your whitelist. But it is fairly simple, and if you have a decent firewall installed, should be possible without needing any extra software.

well, i have a little brother who constantly wanna go online (i wanna block that)...and my father who always visit shopping site (to be precise, http://www.mudah.my/ , which i need a whitelist)...

im not that good with customize ip address and domain thinggy...i always use procon latte to block and whitelist certain website, but now it seems a little off

It would probably be better to blacklist sites instead. That way, you can still keep him off whatever sites you blacklist, but he won't have to bug you to add a new site to the whitelist every time he discovers a new page that he wants to visit.

Not to mention you probably want to allow a lot more sites than you want to disallow...

To disable IE, do this (instructions based on Windows XP):

1. Start Group Policy editor (start->run->gpedit.msc)
2. Go to user configuration->Windows settings-> Internet Explorer Maintenance ->Connection
3. Doubleclick on Proxy Settings, check "Enable proxy settings", enter 0.0.0.0 as the proxy server IP.
4. Uncheck "Do not use proxy server for local (intranet) addresses".
5. Click OK, go to User configuration->Administrative templates->Windows Components->Internet Explorer.
6. Doubleclick on "Disable changing proxy settings", select "Enabled" (that's right, you are enabling the disabling), click OK.

IE will start, but wil be unable to go to any site, because proxy at 0.0.0.0 does not exist

Back when I removed IE, I still used MSN messenger, that one didn't work. Also automatic updates stopped working and some other essential stuff that I don't remember.

I just use Adblock... If you ever feel like removing something from a page, right-click on it, and have Adblock block it by pretending it's an ad.

Googling "Chrome Content Filter" shows tinyFilter and FoxFilter. tinyFilter is rated pretty highly by a lot of people, FoxFilter isn't as popular.

nice suggestion, but:
tinyfilter doesnt have any ability to prevent being uninstalled (password set)
foxfilter does have ability to prevent being uninstalled, after getting a passcode (cheap people)...

any other suggestion is welcome before i uninstall my Google Chrome...

how about firewall blocking? i forgot how to do it but it does exist. btw, why not just block via router -,- you could setup a password to protect the router's settings as well imho.

this settings is usually called "parental control", some routers supports scheduled blocking as well.

Just curious, is your main concern the security and stability of your system? In other words, you don't want your brother or dad going to dangerous sites that will infect your machine with virus, spyware, etc?

If that is the case might I recommend just running a separate OS inside VirtualBox or something? They can essentially have their own self contained sandbox to play around in with no risk of infecting Windows. Basically, you just install Windows or Linux inside of Windows and it will run just like a normal program. It's very easy to do. I'd be glad to help you out if you need assistance.

Indeed, a content filter independent from your browser is best. It's not hard to download another browser behind your back, and there are way too many out there for you to manually block all of them. A filter installed as a Chrome extension would just make Chrome less attractive to use.

well, fyi, I use filter on firefox because: my lil bro (always wanna go online if there is no one look after him) and my friend (who always wanna go online if i dont use my lappy [im seeding, thats why leave laptop on])...

now im falling for chrome for it is fast...too bad there is no filter good for chrome like procon latte for firefox...
