I injured my wrist two summers ago and since then my wrist (which previously never complained) has been mouse hating. I first bought a wrist rest that goes on the desk to keep the wrist strait, but what I found was that I was moving my wrist instead of my arm. So my wrist was strait, but moving all over the place. I then bought a mouse pad but it has since become almost as resistive to motion as my desk. The idea was to reduce the resistance and thus the strain on my wrist as it moves back and forth. Then I tried a ball mouse but now my thumb is really sore and I'd rather not have multiple RSI. I also tried a wrist thingy. It goes over the hand and puts a little bean bag under the wrist. I thought it would replace my wrist rest that I am using that goes on the desk, but it is too restrictive and my hand went cold then numb/tingly. I also probably need a wrist rest for my keyboard, but don't want to spend any money on one given my bad luck with these sorts of "save your joint/tendons" items.

Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.

[edit] And "other suggestions" includes input devices that you guys have used and found helpful.

[edit2] I forgot to mention I replaced my  mouse between getting the crap tastic mouse pad and the ball mouse. Additionally, I have seen teflon coated mouse pads, but I know that at least some of them have problems with the coating rubbing off.

[edit3] Also when I refer to a "ball mouse" I mean track ball mouse.

Drink more milk to have more durable bones and joints.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

I forgot to mention that I purchased a new mouse before I purchased a trackball. The pads are new. Its a G500 mouse by the way.

Drink more milk to have more durable bones and joints.

I take a multi-vitamin which contains both calcium and vitamin D. I started doing that after I injured my wrist in hopes it would heal faster. I think the problem was that my wrist didn't heal right. I had it immobilized in a brace for about 3 months and in that time period I think it healed incorrectly leading to my current problems.

soak the mousepad on oil, that should reduce friction. heh. heh. heh.

actually matching your table's height to your elbow's should make the wrist straight, an adjustable seat solves the problem.

My elbow actually rests on the desk. This takes the weight off my shoulder and elbow. My mouse is fairly bulgy. I have considered getting a flat mouse like the apple mice (but with more than one button and not over priced).

I use Microsoft Explorer type mice.  That sloped mouse design eliminated carpal tunnel type stress in my wrist and lower forearm.  That was what that design was for, but due to lawsuit potential, Microsoft cannot advertise the mouse as either reducing the chance of carpal or decreasing the chance of getting carpal in the first place.   I used to have a slight carpal pain, but switching to the Microsoft Explorer mouse with its angled tilt for right-handed users eliminated the carpal problem for me.   That solution was actually suggested by my doctor.  I don't know if one is made for left-handed users.

---------------

Hard plastic top mouse pads have a bumpy surface.  If the tiny bumps are worn smooth, the mouse feet will have more friction on the mouse pad.  If that is the case, getting a new plastic mouse pad is the next thing.

Another way to improve the glide of your current plastic-topped mouse pad is to clean it with windex or other NON-residue spray in order to remove skin oils and atmospheric contaminants.  The bottom of the mouse doesn't have to be cleaned with windex if the glide pads are in physically good condition.  If the glide pads are dirty, chances are you will see spots of gunk on the bottom of the feet.  Simply rub those off with a rough surface such as dry paper towel or if your pants are going into the washer soon, rub the mouse on your pants leg as an impromptu method of rubbing off the spots on the glide pads.

Another way of improving the glide more, albeit for a short time, is to use RainX sparingly on the hard plastic surface.  The ultra-slickness will last a short while until something like your hands or atmospheric contaminants (combined with the rubbing of the feet) remove the RainX effect.    I have not yet experimented with use of DRY teflon or Cerflon lubricants, although I have them in my garage.  They will be up for the next experiment after the RainX effect wears off on my mousepad.

I am talking about the older non-stylish "silver" series of Microsoft Explorer mice.  Those were originally released years ago as Explorer, Explorer 2, and Explorer 3.  The Explorer 3 also had a wireless version with tilt-wheel so that you could use the wheel in four directions.   If you look closer at the silver mouse, you see it is right handed with that tilted bump which cants the entire hand at a slight angle.

As for shiny mice, I bet a lot of users have dirty moist hands, so the shine would be obscured by grimy fingerprints.
