So, I uh... bought a mac. WTF do I do?
« on: January 10, 2012, 04:14:35 AM »
So... How the hell do I use this shit?

What the hell do I load on it program wise?

Why the fuck is it so slow.

(Bought it off a friend who was looking to upgrade)

Decided it was time I figured out how to use the damn thing because people keep asking me how to fix them.

For a few hundred bucks, spec wise, it's equivalent to a current i3 laptop worth more than what I paid for it. Plus I get to see into the minds of mac users everywhere.

No 1000 I am not doomed. I am actually up 3 laptops this christmas. One is an old c2D T7100 at 1.8Ghz which I used to play with an SSD and likely will be used for traveling and stuff (fucker is an old lenovo T series. Magnesium shell means the fucker is near indestructible). The second was an i7 based one at 2.2Ghz for work. This last one is just for fun. A few hundred bucks. I can rip it apart and sell it for more than I paid for it. Hands down.

Except... I don't know what the fuck I'm doing... lol. Likely, I'll be able to clean it up, and reformat and sell for more than I paid for it. But I'd rather learn how this thing ticks so I can kill and unkill it on demand. But... what the fuck is this? It's more confusing than linux!

Easy: Return it and get your money back.
Demons run when a good man goes to war. Night will fall and drown the sun, when a good man goes to war. Friendship dies and true love lies, night will fall and the dark will rise, when a good man goes to war. Demons run but count the cost, the battle's won, but the child is lost.

I didn't buy it from a store. I bought it used from a friend for a few hundred bucks. For what I paid, learning how to use the OS, the pros and cons of this product (I've always said a mac is great for a computard) and dismantling it to see how it's put together and fixed etc. can easily be justified as the cost of tuition.

Install Windows 7 on it. =)

Dual boot is always an option. But hear me out.

I currently have 2 personal laptops with win 7.
1 dual boots ubuntu win 7
1 is purely win 7. Uses an SSD.

I recently received a new work laptop.
i7 w/ other decent specs sans HDD. HDD is a slow piece of shit 5400rpm one. Work laptop, unless boss pays (not likely, I'm not tinkering with it)

True, I could dual boot to learn how it works, but I wouldn't do it to use windows on a mac when I have "real" computers to use windows on.

Things I have learned thus far:

- Swiping doesn't seem to exist on this older version of OSX
- Right clicking involves two fingers on the touch pad and pushing the click button
- Installation uses .dmg files similar in nature to how we use .iso in daemon tools.
- Many programs look fucktardedly different from the windows version (Skype, VLC, Word, Quicktime)
- The bottom is totally enclosed with plastic. Thus, unlike windows laptops, slides on a lap easily.
- Supposedly, a mac battery lasts longer if you never turn off the laptop. Or at least don't turn it off on a regular basis. I just remove the battery on a regular laptop
- Internal fan spins like crazy when going to youtube... flash no likey?

What version of OSX are you running?  You should be able to upgrade it, the is no security checks on mac operating systems, but they are so stupidly cheap that even I pay for them.

OSX can be a little confusing at first, although I found it rather like GNOME on linux.

theres a handful of games that runs on mac, most of them crashes all the time as well.
Never had a game crash on my mac... more games crash on windows for me.

a few of games I have on my macbook right now:
gratuitous space battles
homeworld 2
uplink

But I tend to use OSX for getting things done rather than gaming.

anyways, I had the same issue when I first used a mac (I was like WTF?)
but give it a couple of days. . .TBH you having so much computers makes it sound like you've got the knack or something. . .(hopefully)

so if you're not retarded you'll find your way around really fast and realize that the OS is way better. . .

TBH everything is drag'n'drop based. . .

what machine did you get?
is it an intel based or PowerPC based. . .cause TBH the G5's are amazing! and you should start by reformating and starting from scratch  =from what you said, I assume its a laptop so if its not intel its a G4 (TBH my brother's G4 is 10 years old and he still uses it and he is still very happy with it) and he is not a gamer. . .casual computer user.

anyways, right clicking is rare in macs, you only use it if you are (or were) a windows user and many things can only be done with "right-click"  mac has this drag n drop and other things that make it easier once you get the hang of it

OS's primary function is to be intermediary link with an interface between applications and the hardware on which they run. Thus the quantity of the programs capable on running using an OS is directly proportional to the usefulness of an OS. I am sure you are familiar with the fact of how few applications a Mac OS can run in comparison to it's main competitor, so please don't spread blatant lies like that. Maybe your words will hold any truth to them the day when I can run all my games, CAD/CAM and JTAG applications on an Apple made OS.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

I will admit mac has many "compatibility" issues, and I know that if all those games/programs had enough support for mac the mac would run them even more efficiently than windows. . .

from what I know (and feel free to correct me) the deal with MacOS (based of unix) is the way they manage the RAM memory
Windows fragments it as it goes along, MacOS keeps defragmenting it as it goes along, taking more space than required per program (so you could say it can run less programs if you were to saturate it) but the problem on windows systems is that the excess of fragmentaion in the RAM memory eventually causes that fatal crash, program not responding and ultimately OS freeze. . .which to this day I havent seen MacOS freeze (i've seen programs freeze but not the "I have to hold down the power button to shut it down" freeze

(click to show/hide)

thats what I've understood

eh? i hardly even notice it happening on my end even though i havent restarted my seedbox(temporary =p) for a month with ram intensive programs using it(2gb ram while 70-80% is being used atm).

though how could fragmentation do any issues at all? even SSDs doesn't die by fragmentation, nor does it slow down.
