Shooting game: Team fortress 2 is free to play, also Counter Strike: Global Offensive is gonna come out this year, both run on the Source engine so they won't be heavy.
Dota-like game; You have League of Legends, also free to play, and Dota 2 coming out later this year.

I don't know much about the other two categories, I guess Burnout Paradise is a good buy.

Also, you don't need to limit yourself to these genres, its always good to explore other genres and see what appeals to you. Take advantage of demos and steam sales to see if you find anything you like. Try out the demo for Trine or Torchlight. Both very cheap games. I'd also recommend Bioshock and Mass Effect.

You can just adjust the difficulty so I don't see why this is a problem.

Try to check out these: Crysis series, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Hard Reset, Homefront, Medal of Honor, Metro 2033. Am I anywhere near what you want? If not then you'll have to give us more. Would third-person be okay?

But yeah, if it's only for your brother then going with demos would the the best before you guys end up buying games he wouldn't want to play anyway.

Sorry, I just assumed that you were a bit closed off to other genres based on your games list. :)
I totally recommend Trine 1 and 2, they are both budget games but they don't lack in quality. They are physics based platformers in a fantasy setting. They are not very hard, but they will make you think a bit.  :D
Trine 1 is great and Trine 2 is simply breathtaking, both have local Co-op (Trine 2 has online Co-op too) if you have a controller I totally recommend giving it a go at Co-op with your little brother. The game has a great atmosphere and its fun for all ages. Its one of those games that has the potential to generate some fond, lasting memories.

As for good Single player shooters: Half-Life 2, Crysis, Farcry 2 and Painkiller: Black Edition are all great picks, all have adjustable difficulty. Bioshock is great pick if you like shooters with RPG elements and a great atmosphere. Borderlands also has RPG elements and an addictive loot system.
