I'm really interested in hearing your experiences with the Asus, I'm not being sarcastic here and I am serious.

I've got an Asus, it's awesome. Aside from the cooling issue that all laptops face it can run a decent amount of stuff, it's pre-loaded software isn't awful, even got an Linux type boot thing that is slightly useful.

I just got an Asus G53SX myself to replace my recently broken laptop, and so far I've never gotten it reach 90C. Very rarely it reaches 89C, but that's as high as it gets (FYI, I'm not even using it on an air-conditioned room, and living in a tropical country, the average temperature here is higher than your average room temperature). It's got two fans, one for CPU and one for GPU, so cooling is much better than standard laptops. A proper gaming desktop should be able to run cooler even with better spec, but I think this one's alright for a laptop. As long as you don't go 24hrs non-stop playing Battlefield 3 or metro2033 and instead give it some rest every few hours it should last quite long I think (though as I said, I just got it myself so I can't really tell how long will it last). Downside is it's freaking huge for a 15.6" laptop, even the power adapter is huge; a bit larger than a brick. It's also pretty expensive.
If you want cheaper gaming laptops and you live in the US, Sager NP8130/8150 might be a good choice, both also have two fans so they should also run cooler than most laptops with similar specs. I intended to buy one myself, but Sager's almost impossible to find in my country.
On the topic of which one is better: Desktop is still much better for gaming than laptops. However, gaming laptops also have their own appeal. For example in my case: I'm a student who went to uni out of town, and goes home during semester holidays. Having a desktop at my dorm means that when I go home, I can't do anything at home. A solution might be to get two good desktops and put one at my dorm and one at home, but that will end up just as expensive as getting a gaming laptop, plus the fact that the one at home will be only used at most 3 months in a year. Having a gaming laptop means that I can just bring my laptop to the dorm, and bring it back on holidays. Sure, my laptop is large, but it's still possible to carry it, at least much more feasible than carrying a desktop. Of course, since this can't be upgraded, I will most likely need to get a new one in 3-4 years (if it doesn't break down by then already), but 3 years is plenty of time to save up some money. In the end, it all depends on your needs.

That's why my desktop has removable wheels so I don't have to carry it

In to and out of the car? Up or down the stairs? Unless you have custom ramps for it all.

Right now desktops has a better price to performance ratio then laptops. I say in the next 5 years that may not be true anymore.

Just make some custom wheels with suspension and rubber tires and slap a motor on it and you're good to go.
