Maybe your hesitation about desktop mobility is because they are so inconvenient to carry due to their size and limited places where they can be gripped without breaking something.
To make a midtower PC mobile or conveniently "carryable", I use an Antec Lanboard. It is basically a rectangular platform with wheels underneath it and a separate carrying strap setup with plastic handle by which you pick up the whole thing. You can also use it without the wheels.
