Film Reviews and Analysis
« on: January 18, 2012, 12:34:44 PM »
So I got this idea yesterday. I love watching famous classic films or those with a reputation for being something special. I often find myself critiquing and analyzing them mentally in my free time, so I thought I could make a thread for it.

I propose to pick random films I have watched, give a brief introduction, review them and recommend (or not recommend) them, and also write up a theme/plot analysis where applicable.

I won't be able to do this too often, so other people can also join in with their reviews. While I don't ask you to have a serious writing style, it would be nice if you take your reviewing itself somewhat seriously.

Note: NOT ANIME FILMS.

If you're not interested in reviewing, you could read pick up some good films from here. It's a common complaint I hear that there aren't enough films that are good and interesting, or that the themes in English films are too repetitive. The problem is that the better films are usually old or obscure, or both. I can expose you to at least the ones that I have seen, or that I want to see.

So what do you think, is this thread a good idea?

if its not anime films then the options to pick from just got so tiny all of the sudden... though not a bad thread.

Edit: one film i find still lingering on my thoughts for more than a decade is "Mouse Hunt (1997)", the comedy it packs isn't lacking and its not boring either, one problem though the ending was kinda dry.

PS: you outa add in a spoiler warning on the thread title, as this whole thread is a potential spoiler fest.

Of course, analysis sections will be spoilered.
I remember Mouse Hunt. It was the second English film I watched in the theater. I found it funny at the time (I was 4 or 5, watched it again a couple of years later), but it wasn't anything special, was it?

I think this thread would be a good idea. If you want a good comedy,Splitting Heirs was hilarious from what I remember.

@Tyler Lol no, looks retarded.

Let's get this straight. I won't be reviewing popular films just because they are popular. I won't be reviewing recently released films. I will certainly not review random comedy, romance or action films. I'll add a list of genres I mean to review in the first post.
But other posters can review whatever they like, no restrictions on that.

froody, as far as I'm concerned, all comedy is retarded. But it's hilarious.

Can we make requests for you to analyze, froodo?

Does the Live Action adaption of Death Note count as an anime film? I want a review from froodo on it. I have yet to watch it and want to know if it is worth it.

Don't want to watch it, sorry. I doubt it would be "deep".

The anime was semi-deep IMHO (though my idea of deep isn't too deep).

Im not sure if the list in the OP is a list of films you planned to review or films that you wanted reviewed. Ive seen most of them, but the one I have seen (or re-seen) most recently was Fargo, so I will add a review.

The film follows a car salesman from Minnesota (William H. Macy) who finds himself in a heap of debt and in an effort to get some quick income, he hatches a plan to stage his wifes kidnapping. He then hires two bumbling crooks played by the socially awkward Steve Buscemi and his silent but violent partner in crime played by Peter Stormare. Once things begin to get out of hand, in comes detective Marge played by Frances McDormand. The rest of the film portrays the the events leading to its eventual outcome. Which I will omit to avoid spoilers.

This is a pretty good film over all. Its not a comedy by any means, but it does have a few funny scenes, often attributed to its copious use of yooper accents. Perhaps I found it a bit funnier because I live fairly close to areas where many people actually talk like that so it was one of those "lol, so true" type of things. There arent any deep meanings or anything, but I would recommend the film to those looking for something a little more serious but not deep or boring.

Dont know what else to say.
I kinda feel like people looking for actual film reviews could find them somewhere else, but I was bored so I chipped in.

Films that I'm going to review.
Fargo is one of the films I also plan to write an analysis about.

,,,
Hmm. Most interesting :P

Edit: Gonna do a review and analysis later today. I think I'll do Taxi Driver. Done writing it. I'll put it in a separate post after someone makes a post.

Since you've got Scarface in there, I'd also suggest Carlito's Way, another great Pacino movie directed by Brian De Palma.  Dog Day Afternoon is another highly regarded Pacino flick that is worth watching.  (Obviously there are more, but these are the Pacino movies that I saw for the first time within the last few weeks.)
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

Great review, froodo. I plan on watching Taxi Driver now, especially since De Niro is in it. I never noticed before how much I love the way you write, bravo. Do you have an interest in becoming a journalist?

Why, thank you good sir. I'd like to be a video game journalist as a side job, but I doubt the primary field I want to work in is going to leave me any time for that.

EDIT: Lol, looks like there really isn't much interest in this thread. Gonna write a review for Brazil tomorrow. If nobody but Tyler responds, screw this thread :P

like i said ._. if you take out anime the selections becomes so small, one of my reasons is because its harder to get good quality films than animes.

though one thing that i've always wanted a grab is "phantoms" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119891/ , i got a VHS copy of it but you know what happened next.
