What do you do when you're depressed?
« on: January 24, 2012, 11:00:34 AM »
The title's pretty much self-explanatory, however you could add aslo what causes you to be depressed.

Ready...Set...Go:

I get depressed from stress.
I think training helps a little when you're depressed.

Breathe deeply and start looking for menial or distracting tasks. I find trying to cheer myself up with comedy or gaming just leads to those becoming dull and tainted which further upset my mood. It's easier for me to be emotionally flat for a while and eventually climb my way back up to normal.

Cooking and oragami is a useful substitute if I can't find real work.

Same here, usually it revolves around cleaning the house, doing laundry and all other stuff that I otherwise can't be arsed to do.

Rarely depressed. I can usually just see the silver lining in such cases and just get cheerful again. After all, there is no reason for anyone to be depressed. XD

other parts I read with absolute sorrow,  because I think them utterly false and grievously mischievous...

Well, I believe "depression" implies a medical condition requiring medication. That is a reason by it's own to be depressed.

Feeling down and being sad would describe the feeling without implying the medical condition.

I don't believe I ever got the medical one, where you'd have to take drugs for it.

Nor do I feel down a lot, if I'm serious, my only real day to day problems are in the lines of "Blast it, stabbed my toe" and "Bugger, overslept". Just ignoring it tends to work fine most of the time, if I do get jumpy or the like, I just shadow box for a half a minute or burn something. Seems to work well if I want to relax.

Well yeah "depressed" has a really broad sense (and that's the good thing about it - you can say many things with one word) - you can't really say where's the boundary between "feeling down and being sad" and "the medical condition requiring medication"... You can even "feel so down" that you become apathetic to everything.

Btw, drugs don't really help (especially weak ones).

Oh, a few different things, depending on circumstances.

Playing OMD's "Statues" real loud really helps, setting up a kind of sympathic vibe while rattling the walls and the glassware.
Going for a long walk in the city helps, too, when there's more time.
Driving around on the lonely grid roads helps greatly, when there's a lot more time available.

On my case, failing to do something on-time because I'm a pro.
how do it overcome it? Muse about it for half an hour then sleep.
Prevents me from being a pro for approximately two days, then
it's back to square one.

Same. Glass is always half full.
But, that doesnt mean I am always happy. Its times like those when I call up some friends and play magic, poker, counter-strike or just go to a bar. I am easily amused and never brood over anything so, yea.

For me, it usually depends as to what triggers my depression / negative feelings.

When I get really tired and/or really stressed and have to concentrate on something, I get really bitchy, which will sometimes drive me into a cycle where I get angry or upset about something, and thinking about it over and over just makes it worse.  I'm definitely a person who broods, so the first thing to do is get away from whatever tasks I have to do, then relax, eat, and rest for a while, and try to reestablish a more neutral mood.

Once I'm in a mindset that isn't quite so negative, then I have to think about what's bothering me, why it's bothering me, and what I can do about it.  If it's something that's just in my head (ie, I'm overreacting to something), then usually talking about it with someone or just blowing it off will help a lot, and I can more or less move on.  But if it's something that's not going to get better until I take action of some kind, I usually have to immediately jump on the task and get it taken care of asap.  Not immediately taking action will usually drive me crazy to the point that I can't focus on other things.

More 'metaphysical' kinds of issues (ie, confronting my own mortality, am I wasting life, what do I want to be when I grow up, etc) are tougher.  I'm pretty introspective, so I've spent a lot of time on these subjects, but even so haven't come up with a lot of good 'answers'.  In these cases, I've learned to accept that there are just some questions that I'll probably never find an acceptable answer to, and that it's OK to leave these things unanswered.  My personal philosophy has evolved into, "Do something to change the things that upset you, or else don't be upset by those things."  It's hardly revolutionary, but acceptance is a pretty big deal for a person like me who broods and obsesses over things.

EDIT -- and, coincidentally appropriate to the thread's subject, everytime I see the OP's name 'criver', I read it as 'cry me a river' and lol a bit.

Quite someting your answer here.
"Once I'm in a mindset that isn't quite so negative, then I have to think about what's bothering me, why it's bothering me, and what I can do about it." - the bad thing is that when a person can't do anything on the matter he starts ruminating over it - and the depression gets even worse...

"everytime I see the OP's name 'criver', I read it as 'cry me a river' and lol a bit." - I never thought about this - it was a random name I came up with.

When i ruminate too much i have to listen to music otherwise i'm stuck like that for the rest of the day, ruminate creates an annoying beacon inside the brain that prevents it from relaxing or in my wording for it "breathing".

Lately i've also found that mentally killing off annoyances that drag you down people, items, objects etc etc even the people who have done nothing wrong but are simply the source of your anguish.
