What do you do when you're depressed?

Lately i've also found that mentally killing off annoyances that drag you down people, items, objects etc etc even the people who have done nothing wrong but are simply the source of your anguish.

The problem is that it is not always possible to "mentally kill off the annoyances that drag you down" - especially people - I tend to be really asocial (not up to the level of a hikkimori though), but that doesn't help when you don't have a choice but to meet up and speak with people (so for me people are one of the most depressing things - they stress me out a lot)...

"Once I'm in a mindset that isn't quite so negative, then I have to think about what's bothering me, why it's bothering me, and what I can do about it." - the bad thing is that when a person can't do anything on the matter he starts ruminating over it - and the depression gets even worse...

Yep, exactly right.  That's why, as I said earlier, I've progressed to a philosophy of acceptance about certain things.  There's an adage that says, "God give me the strength to change the things I can change, to accept the things I can't change, and to know the difference between the two."  I think there's some real wisdom there (at least the non-God related part).  I still struggle with depression at times; I hit low points in 2001 and again in 2006/2007, but overall I think I've got a better perspective now than I have in past years.  And when I'm down, I do try to remember some of the positive things in life; it helps sometimes.

Having the proper perspective is important.  As my roommate likes to say, "We both have white people problems."  That always makes me laugh.

I cook. Granted, I also cook when I'm happy, anxious, hungry or expecting company. Any passion of mine helps distract me long enough to pull myself out of shit.
