I am only using it for the same purpose as you. It is just in my computer for no good reason. Feels as outdated as having a floppy drive or something.
Also, there are a lot of memory sticks out there with a stylish look. If made for games, they could even have the theme matching the game.

They most likely could get them cheaper than that but still way more expensive than a bluray disc.
So enjoy your more expensive games.

There are no games out there that are 50GB large. There is no way blu ray reading speed is anywhere as fast as USB memory stick.

Still bluray discs are way cheaper to manufacture than USB sticks.
Estimated at 1.8 USD per single layer disc or 2.75 USD for a dual layer disc in 2008.

I don't think USB sticks are even remotely close to that figure.
Edit: Apparently NAND flash memory chips (Probably the most expensive part of USB sticks, but certainly not the total cost) cost about 1,6 USD per GB as of now (but is expected to drop according to the article with 40-50% when new manufacturing sites go up).
Still way more expensive than a single layer bluray disc. 25GB for 1,8 USD or 1,6 USD per GB for flash memory.

Some games come pretty close to that, Final Fantasy XIII is 37.6GB large.
And Killzone 3 is 41.5GB

Its good that if you leave it in the washer in your pocket it still works

Memory sticks are sort of indestructible, fit anywhere and there isn't a computer that wouldn't be able to read them. When you compare to Blu-ray, which is still rather fragile (It's about luck, you may run over it with a train and it works or touches the carpet once and it's done for) and big ...And also I dare say most of computers do not have BD mechanic yet.

digital memory ftw but no physical copies is even better.
There is several pluses to mem cards vs disks.
from the manufacturers POV -
retards will lose them constantly = MORE SALES
allows you to get rid of that shitty cd/bluray drive and the proprietary fees that are associated with using them as competitors, Allowing you to make a more visually appealing gaming console that is made smaller where possible.
you compare to a bluray disk but microsoft dont use bluray and neither does nintendo so compare to competition.
So yea 8gb usb stick vs disks from msft or 1 4gb stick for nintendo
Consumer POV-
Mass use of mem cards will drive cost down exponentially for consumers in the regular market,
No more scratched disks
No more disk drives to fail and less moving parts.
likely smaller consoles
faster load times
