  • How was that one Anime/Manga we all saw/read?
The Ones Around You
« on: February 29, 2012, 02:27:47 AM »
I was just thinking today..
How sometimes it just sucks when you have no one to talk to about anime/manga.
Then there are those very rare occasions (well at least for me) where there is someone that watches anime but not to the point where I could have a proper conversation. The only thing they would watch is the ones everyone has or is currently watching. You know like Bleach, Naruto, Code Geass, Vampire Knight Ect. The only places where you talk about anime/manga is website like this but sometimes that just isn't enough.

How do you people feel knowing that sometimes you just can't talk to people about anime/manga? Do you wish there was someone near you to talk about this? Do you basically feel alone where you are because of that?

The only anime most of my friends watch is Dragon Ball Z (and still they call it a cartoon). I have one friend who watches Bleach. I spend all my time on /a/ on 4chan talking to them about anime so I don't really have any problem with socialising about anime.

I only know one person who watches anime. We don't actually really talk about it though and really, it doesnt bother me. I can't think of a time when I was like hey, "I wish I had someone to talk about that new episode of whatever with!"

The only reasons I have for wishing I had other friends who were into anime is so we can go to conventions and stuff. As it is, I only have two friends who likes to go to anime conventions and even then, only one of them actually watches anime. They other is just a good friend of mine who is pretty nerdy also. So, even though he doesn't watch anime, he likes to go for the atmosphere and the other parts that are not directly anime related.

I kind of have the opposite problem.  My roommate and several other mutual friends we have are all into anime to varying degrees, so I don't generally have an issue with not having someone to talk to.  One of my roommate's friends, however, reads voraciously, is completely addicted to manga & anime, and will talk your ear off about it given the chance.  If you casually mention a show he's seen, be prepared to hear a full description of the plot including spoilers, plus descriptions of 2 or 3 other unrelated shows, plus whatever else happens to occur to him at the same time.  The guy's pretty smart, so even if he wanders off onto several tangents during the conversation, he will remember them all and will eventually circle back through each of them if he has enough time.  He's not a bad guy, he's just completely lacking any self control when it comes to conversation, and he knows it.
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

I have a friend who's sort of into anime but lately has been a little out of the loop when it comes to what's new. He doesn't really watch fansubs either as he thinks they're harmful to the industry. But that's a totally different issue...

Anyway, other than him, I don't have anyone I can talk to about anime or manga. And you know what? That's perfectly okay with me. I like to think of anime and manga as a private hobby that I can enjoy to escape reality everyday once in a while.

And now that I think about it, there really hasn't been an anime or manga that has compelled me to want to talk about it after I finished it. The last time I ever felt that way was after I finished watching all of Lost. My sister and I sat there for like two hours trying to figure out the ending lol. Definitely a mind=blown scenario. But anime and manga? Nah.
And even though we feel dead inside, we can still say, "At least we tried."

Apart from the net... Convert your friends. You just have to know what they like and pick them the right anime for that  :D
Once you hook them up with one good piece, they tend to never leave. Especially Cowboy Bebop seems to be very good prapaganda material in my experience.

My have few friends that watch anime, but we rarely talk about it when we meet or when we chat. Just mention something and so on. I guess thats because we have different taste in it or something.
I do not really miss talking about anime with someone beside people on anime forums. I do not remember the titles and names, I always have to look them up anyhow. Its kind of hard to have discussion if you have to look things up in computer or do not really know what people are talking about. After all I have watched over 1000 anime titles >_> and mostly do not remember them unless they were super stupid or super good :D Most of them are just mediocre.

My dad is watching Naruto :D so i can discuss it with him :D xDD
Also two of cousins and their gf-s watch anime so i can discuss many other animes with them.
Only one boy from my french group watches Naruto, and also his sister. but there's nothing that much to talk to them, only Naruto.
And none of my friends watches anime at all :D and they want me to stop watching it too :D but no way!

I need to first get myself some friends, once I have achieved that, much like fishing, I need to lure them into watching anime, but slowly and gently, so they don't know they are being reeled in. Then after a few weeks, they'll be watching it and the trap will be complete.

I say trap, I mean enlightenment.

I was about to answer this thread when I realized that I haven't watched nearly as much anime as many people here judging from your signatures. If you take a quick gander at my statistics, do I count as an animefan, or just one who watches "...the ones everyone has or is currently watching."?

Otherwise, yes, I have a few friends who watches anime about as much as I do.

I was successful in pulling my imouto into this dark side..

But I think I overdid it, because she's starting to be more and more like a fujoshi..

I invested in an imaginary friend for anime and philosophic related discourse years ago.

Anime are just another medium of fiction, even if someone hasn't read the same book or seen the same movie I can discuss the ideas and concepts therein. I remember having a fairly good debate about Death Note with a philosophy professor over tea, discussing Code Geass with history scholars, analyzing Ghost in the Shell and Evangelion with a science fiction critic.

If it's just trivial fan discussions I generally do them here if I feel so inclined.

Well, there's the one guy who got me into anime, I talk to him when I watch/read something interesting. Plus 3 of my cousins whom I talk to sometimes.
But I don't really feel the need to talk about it in the first place, guess that's just me.

I've got some friends that were into anime in some moment of their life, but right now there's only one which tags along with airing shows and we talk about them every now and then.

But I don't really feel the need to talk about it in the first place, guess that's just me.

This.

I only have one friend who is into anime, but he lives in a different country, so we only talk about it in msn occasionally,
like: Have you seen anything great lately and so on. Actually its his wife who is the anime expert, but I don't know her that well. But it doesn't bother me that much. Bf watch some series with me, but I like have something that is just "mine".

But I don't really feel the need to talk about it in the first place, guess that's just me.

This.

This for me too.
