Project Durango [the new xbox]
« on: March 01, 2012, 08:25:25 PM »

There have been rumors that Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox console, which some term the Xbox 720, is codenamed “Durango.” The report first surfaced on Kotaku, which claimed to have heard the name from multiple sources close to the project. But today, a now-pulled Tweet from a Crytek game developer inadvertently confirmed the codename and revealed a secret developer summit underway in London for the new console.
Crytek developer Sean Tracy Tweeted earlier today: “Enjoying the Durango developers summit in London. So far, great swag and interesting talks.” Crytek has been rumored to be developing a TimeSplitters 4 game as one of the launch titles for the next-gen console, although it denied the reports. The Xbox 720 or project Durango is expected to debut at this years E3 gaming conference in June.
The Tweet has since been deleted, but the Durango codename now seems firm. Although it won’t be the actual name of the console at launch, we’ll likely be hearing plenty of the name along with the Xbox 720 moniker in the following months leading up to E3 as new details and leaks emerge.
The next generation Microsoft Xbox 720 has been tipped to be shipping in late October or early November complete with six times the power in an AMD 6000 series GPU under the hood. There’ve been reports from several sources saying the same set of details, the most recent confirmation coming from IGN’s source close to the project. Specifically it appears that the Xbox 720 will be using the AMD Radeon HD 6670 working with support for DirectX11, 3D and 1080p HD output, and multidisplay output.
The Radeon 6670 itself costs upwards of $79.99, so we’re likely not looking at an inexpensive device in the end here. That said, the Xbox 720′s graphics processing power because of this beast of a GPU will be six times the Xbox 360. Compared to the upcoming Wii U (as seen in some lovely hands-on videos back a few months here on SlashGear), the Xbox 720 will be set to have a 20-percent greater performance on the whole.
For those of you out there in the world of developing for consoles can expect kits for the system in August. Now we’ve just got to wait for the third PlayStation and we can have the whole three mouskateers in the ring for 2013! Which one will you be picking up given the information we’ve got currently? Not one whole heck of a lot of information is out there, but the names are all here!
When Nintendo went on the record with its next generation console called the Wii U at E3 this year we knew that word would start coming before long of the other big gaming firms working in new consoles of their own. The first we grumblings heard of after the Wii U was the next generation Xbox console from Microsoft that is being called the Xbox 720 for now. AMD has come out and stated that the next Xbox will have some very impressive graphics.

According to AMD, the graphics on the console will be of the level of the smash-hit Avatar movie that put 3D on the map in a big way. Along with the graphics at Avatar levels of detail, AMD’s Neal Robison also claims that the next generation game console will also allow for higher degrees of game AI. This power will allow the game AI to give each of the characters on the screen their own mentality.

That means in Grand Theft Auto for instance whipping out your gun and shooting won’t see all the characters on screen do the same thing. Microsoft still hasn’t officially announced any plans for a console to replace the Xbox 360. You can bet that the company is hard at work on the successor.
