Philosophy majors tend to go to seminars while high down here.
that's another stereotype thats extremely annoying, which is based entirely on the culture, environment, and individual people, not the paper. I love philosophy and i've never smoked anything or done drugs in my life.

We stereotype everything based on individuals we meet. It's natural and it's mostly useful.

It's kind of a common joke, I agree. But out of the 5 phi majors I personally know, three of them do that. And out of the five, those three have the better grades.

its true stereotypes aren't stereotypes for no reason, but that's exactly why they piss me off. because people that try to make themselves different from them always get caught up in them

However, we are not dealing with you. We are dealing with phi majors.

When we will, your individual personality and tastes will be taken into the count. But before then, it's simply a waste of effort to even consider it, at least as long as we are speaking about groups. If you manage to change the whole group, the stereotype will follow in due time.

On a remark that you said earlier, that I'm too lazy to find and quote. "You said that everyone was average". Don't you have any competitive rivalry to "one up" the guy next to you in your classes?

i'm not saying everyone is average, just the majority of people are average because if you 'one up' the guy in your class, then they'll want to one up you, and if everyone does it it'll raise the average level, thus still being a majority average.

also, i'm taking jsut as many philosophy papers as i am my majors so i kind of does include me (i want to triple major but i'm not sure if that's possible, but i can see that a degree in philosophy can't really go anywhere (anywhere thats obvious anyway, im sure it can still lead into some jobs) which is why i'm just taking it for fun at the moment

metro, your opening sentence to this discussion called my degree a joke. that's an insult.

Chin up champ, you'll run into more insulting things then that in your time.
My faculty and me personally have been insulted numerous times in this thread, just as a product of the discussion.

Do you realize that if everyone replied to everyone else's discomfort with "chin up", or "deallll", there would be no motivation to express any displeasure whatsoever on this forum? How retarded would it be for everyone to go to the "things that piss you off!" thread and reply "dude, life's unfair sometimes, stop complaining." A forum is just a format for people to voice their opinions, and when people are doing it in a polite manner, they shouldn't be faulted for that.

Here you can easily get jobs in advertising, news papers and journals with degree in philosophy, they like this degree in these spheres.

But it is better not to touch philosophy just for fun, it can tur out quite bad...you could become academic by doing that >_>
I almost did that and then some kind of sanity came back to me :D ...well there is always time to get my doctors degree, but I hope I will not be that foolish :D

don't worry, i'm not scared of it! i know that people that aren't aware of the things philosohpy and psychology teach you are generally happier than those that do, but i'm not gonna stay blind and just ignore it. its good to hear some other jobs that it can lead into though.

See, that's me using my ej'u'cation.

I see what you did there.
You could expand on what some of you are talking about, particularly taking and learning about Philosophy and classes that deal with the humanities. Wouldn't the ideal goal be to find a balance between both finding "answers" to life, yourself, and society alongside a job or career that can support your lifestyle and endeavors? It's not black and white because you can learn about either of the two even if you don't take classes specifically dealing with them, but for the sake of this thread it does help having a class designed for such purposes.
This basically spun off from a small discussion I had yesterday. Resume.

I'm not disagreeing with you, it's a question of valuing more than one type of knowledge and something beyond your résumé. The idea that you have to go to university or college to improve yourself is fallacious and elitist, but it's a path available to you. Post-secondary education is a genuinely constructive experience, and I encourage people to utilize the time to the upmost while they can.

I think I should have used "one" instead of "you" because I wasn't directly referring to you but everyone in here. But yes, I feel University is just a start, not an end; you don't (or shouldn't) stop learning after it. I can't argue from a perspective of one who's finished post-secondary education, but I bet you learn a significant amount and maybe even as much as you did from sitting in classes.

This isn't really a requirement to understanding my argument however, I suggest reading Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood - or if you have already - try to recall it with some more clarity.

It's a dystopian science fiction novel, though the author sees it more as speculative fiction. Her vision of the future is one of increased social stratification with capitalism and science at its heart. It's somewhat over-dramatic and blunt as a sledgehammer in getting its point across. However, her view of academics as becoming soulless, hyper-specialized, extremely competitive, and devoid of liberal arts and humanities beyond training the next generation of advertisers, is becoming disconcertingly closer to the truth.

The main character for instance, goes to a liberal arts college to learn corporate double-speak to use in advertising and legal copy. He has fun inventing meaningless multisyllabic words that sound like they exists to confuse people.

Yes I am, while I slam my face into work trying to get my future sorted out people act like they dgaf.

Which I guess shouldn't really make me upset, but when it interferes with me getting things done, it really does.

Still in high school, but I'm going for double major in physics and music technology. If not, physic major and music performance major/minor. Not sure which.

Music technically counts as art. Though it'a generally classified as "fine arts."
