Durarara And the Real Dollars
Nikkoru:
I remember trying that before, the Dollars BBS I think, it wasn't working then.
It's a cool idea for a site, or an organization
--- Quote ---Just who are the Dollars?
To put it simply, we are a group united in transparency. Our flag has no color, and our members are not bound to any hierarchy. At over 10,000 strong from across the globe, we have many smaller cells, but there is no true leader. Age, ethnicity, economic status, ability; none of that matters here. Everyone is equal.
We abhor violence and go out of our way to bring peace, justice and prosperity to our respective communities. We want to show the world that groups like ours are not to be feared. Many of the Dollars vow to do what they can, and our only reward is motivating others to join our cause. We use a Bulletin Board System to congregate and bounce ideas off one another, as well as being a place for general discussion of shared hobbies and interests.
Anyone can join. Just say you’re in the Dollars and you’re in. Spread the word.
We are the Dollars, and we welcome you in open arms!

While it's fiction, Durarara!!! understood human nature and the social-media age pretty well. Such communities could encourage someone do more than they usually would in order to get the general approval of one's peers and those of like mind. Furthermore it isn't the hyperbolic house of mirrors like Facebook, more along the lines of discreet collectivism that Anonymous projects. And without a centralized figure, anyone who joins can feel a sense of equality within. Utilizing rumour, peer pressure, a sense of belonging, and anonymity - a powerful combination based on my observations of net culture.
It's very clever, while the Dollar site specifically might not expand much beyond a litany of anime fans - it's too much of a marketing play, or appears to be so - the model behind could work if enough effort is put into its development.
