Re: Tera censorship.

I see the Tera thread talking about gameplay, but im surprised no one has mentioned the censorship issue that comes with it.

There are many reasons people say it was done, but the 2 most accepted ones are that they feared a backlash from overzealous religious people, and the upper management at Enmasse found them distasteful.

How do you guys feel about it? I know that if it were an anime coming over people would go apeshit if they censored something as trivial as this in it.

PS: If you are not familiar with what has been changed, the Elin race, has had all of their bottom's(bikini styled armor for the most part) replaced with shorts. and all of their stomach's covered.
Actually, that happens to most of the games not developed in US and then imported, doesn't it? I remember  certain other game, which in Jap version had very skimpy/sexy underwear for both genders, but in NA version, everyone has big underwear covering body from knees  and elbows to neck, which of course also means all "revealing" outfits do not show body now, but huge grandma-styled underwear. That goes for male belly and chest too.

Doesn't that have something to do with age rating perhaps? "NA" is very strict on that, where in asia or europe seeing bellybutton doesn't often count as "Sexual content". Not to mention, I don't think anyone over here cares if 15 years old buy a game rated 18, but from what I've heard, in US this part of the market is rather monitored... So it could mean a bit of a money loss for the company.

I hate the skank armour so much, that I disregarded this game as a piece of shit right away. If they actually fix it to something less absurd, I might even give that game a try.

It's not so much about censorship as it is about bad game design.

Love it or hate it, if you try to fix the design by placing "Don't look here" signs over everything which was revealing parts of body, you'll just end up looking like an idiot.

From what I understood they just put some clothes over the underwear (as people in real world usually do). I don't see how that is a "don't look here" signs.

Here is a guy that explains my point of view on the whole matter perfectly.

Also let's not forget this video on the matter.

Who needs traditional armor when you have magic?

Anyway, all this bullshit kinda took away my motivation to play the game, tbh. I will still get around to it eventually, but its just dumb and I would almost feel like I am forcing myself at this point.

I'm not arguing about practicality in case of plate armor or ... traditional, religious and moral side.
But if you are wearing one layer of silken cloth to defend aginst a sword, you might just as well have undies or nothing ...if you put extra square of cloth on your bellybuton and ass won't really save your life.
And in RP sesne, if I was a magic user, I'd prolly go for something very skimpy too, it has effects on morale and causes  distraction... and maybe confusion up to paralysis, depending on your gender and body mass, hah. But the thraditional chain bikini warrior is stupid - wasn't the case here anyway.

Plus the game has been made one way, take it or leave it, censoring it is just stupid.

Just looked at what this will actually look like, it's shitty no matter what version of the clothes are. Those juvenile Koreans need to get laid or something.

Also self censoring is not censoring. The company did this on their own initiative, so your argument is invalid.

You've kind of missed the important part I was saying, but allright. Edit: As Jesta says. Not self- thing.

If someone likes a game because you can see a butt all day long, I just don't know why it offends you or anyone else. No, really, why?
Or why care if you don't like it and don't want to play it at the first place.

The developer did not make the changes, the localization company did.

The changes are minor, and other then a few quality issues I don't mind them all that much.
But why go through all the effort, to bring attention to a non-issue. Not to mention the wasted time and effort.
They also introduced a 2 glitches/bugs with the changes. (IE: you cannot dye the new areas, so you end up with 2 different colors. and the clipping is off in a few of them.)

So I haven't been paying attention to Tera so I had to look up what an "elin" looks like to know what you guys are talking about and all the sudden I remember why some games are just stupid, WHY THE FUCK ARE MIDGETS ALWAYS A PLAYABLE RACE?! WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND COULD POSSIBLY THINK SOME LOLI IS GOING TO HAVE ANY CHANCE IN FIGHTING A NORMAL SIZED ADULT.  I realize that games don't often follow rational physics and lots can be dismissed saying "they have magic" but dammit, if you play as a midget I expect you to have severe strength, endurance, speed, perception, physical defense reductions, but of course they won't and its just fucking stupid.

As for the censorship, imo little kids should not be portrayed as sluts, just my opinion.
Nvm just looked at the changes that Ace posted and the lolis look like sluts either way, oh well.

It does seem pretty obvious without even worrying about the clothes/armour they wear, the existence of a fox/cat/bunny girl race is clear indication what the game is going to be like.

I agree with blog's argument, that if they're going to make armour in a fantasy game it shouldn't look like it was designed by Victoria's Secret - especially when the male characters look like walking tanks.

For example

(click to show/hide)
Looking at the male/female designs in TERA, there isn't a single female character who doesn't look like she's about to fall out of her clothes while many of the men look like they'd need the jaws of life to get out of their's.

(click to show/hide)
It's actually kind of depressing.

This isn't a problem unique to Tera.  It's a problem in all games nowadays.

It's also one of the reasons I loved Dark Souls so fucking much.  I made a female in that game and when I wore full armor you couldn't tell.  There was no retarded breast-shaped chest piece, no flesh showing between the body and feet, and you couldn't even see her face.

I wish more games handled female armor like Dark Souls did.

Well, it's more games ... Warhammer is pretty ... equal to genders. Aion used to be, as far as heavy armor goes. Not sure how's it looking now. WoW offers equally ugly armor for everyone too. Guild wars. Lineage. Kingdoms of Amalur. There's a lot of it. You just have to pick your battles right, what you're showing right here is pretty close to comming to strip bar and complaining about the lack of clothing.

The point was tho, how the hell makes a square of coth places over chest, belly and butt make it more practical?
Plus, why the heck would anyone want that in game which is revolving around the forementioned.

I think armour is pretty secondary here, the fact that female TERA characters have bodies that could put Jessica Rabbit to shame is the crux of the matter. Even when naked, characters in games like Skyrim and Dark Souls are not playboy playmates.

It just reinforces the fact that developers think that gamers are overwhelmingly immature men.

Well, that's truth. Unmodded Skyrim characters are ugly.

You can either sit down, take a cup of tea, put on a monocle and top hat and talk about how it make women into objects, reinforces stereotypes of male lonely and horny gamers and damages children...
OR you can just pick a game which doesn't have skimpy outfits. That's what I meant with "Learn to pick your battles". It was a metaphor.
When you dislike something, why make sure noone else will ever enjoy it, when you can just ignore it.

And if you are looking for any realism, don't play MMOs at all, because armors and their practical use is just scraching the surface. Don't forget that the armors look like they do thanks to playerbase demands. Males tank-like huge powerhouses and small, slim and very busty females with heavy makeup. That has to say something.

I see that argument a lot, and yet I've never seen a thread on a forum for any game titled, "I want sluttier female outfits" even though I've seen tons of "Why are all females in this game big-boobed whores?" threads.

Fact remains - just pick you you like.

But the other fact... *cough* half of especially MMO players ARE overly horny teenagers.
Besides, even if that's not the case, a lot of people prefer spend hunderths of hours watching the back of what the find appealing, rather than the opposite. Which is why not many people play fat characters with curly hair wearing a hobocoat.

I am.
I don't believe you do play fat OR curly characters tho. Screenshots or it didn't happen. And in case it would be in D&D... no... That... That would be just wrong and twisted.
