Uchuu Kyoudai | Space Brothers
« on: April 03, 2012, 09:59:42 AM »

The story follows two brothers, Mutta and Hibito, who made a vow as kids to travel to space. The younger brother Hibito did become an astronaut, but not Mutta. However, Mutta's life changes one fateful day.

AniDB.

First episode is good. I wonder if that "fateful" day has already happened or if it'll happen down the road? I'm thinking Hibito dies. A cliché which I hope this story doesn't contain.

I think the fateful day was in ep1 at the end. His acceptance to the program.

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

Somehow it wasn't selling itself well to me from the description and the trailer, and the first minute or so of the show. BUT...this show made me laugh, and hope, and made me think of all the sci-fi shows that are more realism based that I love.

So why hasn't America done a show of any sort, well except for a kids Saturday morning show back in the 70s about astronauts? Because too many people believe that astronauts only do boring stuff, and you have to have a phD to turn a wrench in space? So basically no one actually gets to be an astronaut???

Because we lost site of our dream to explore the depths of space and colonize planets. If we were actively pursuing colonization of Mars or even a moon base, I bet kids would be a lot more interested becoming an astronaut. But what are we doing now? The same thing we have been doing the last 40 years, just running experiments while in Earth's orbit.

Doesn't help that NASA's budget was gutted.

Certainly doesn't but this has been a problem for a long time now.

Which is much of what I think is charm to this anime. Elder brother is not as good as younger brother, but still he is quite the success in his own right. Although we are seeing the world through his eyes, so just don't feel as if he is as good as at least his little brother thinks he is.

And a lot of our problem with space exploration, is that unless a person is at least as good as younger brother, you don't go up. That and having the most expensive program, even if built by lowest bidder doesn't help.

Problem with current world is that money means nearly everything, if not absolutely everything, should NASA provide good business they would have good money to use, but right now it's all about making business. It's a pity but we won't really leave earth for interstellar exploration in a round 300-500 years. It's a fact, humanity focused on making money, not making progress, and no, that doesn't mean we halted, we are actually going back and filling holes now. With the economical problems right now I noticed a drop in productivity by a large margin already, sales and services pay stable money. It's a problem of course but IDGAF since i won't live long enough to see the change.

As for this show, this will be a pretty cool show I think. Has it's humor but also has it's drama.
Heavy drama will not surprise me, but I suppose it will be part of the story to tell. We had quite a lot of years behind us with happy anime, a trend shift has arrived by the end of last year, and now we will get more dramatic shows for a while.

This one definitely seems the winner of this season. Can already feel that it will have more dramatic depth most of the other series of this season.

This show is simply amazing. The characters are just so easy to connect to even from the first episode, and how they pursue their dreams and simply want to be happy. Hopefully it stays this good!

This is such a good anime! A really good one! The mangaka knows how to build expectations and creating the mood, and the anime director does a great job transferring that.
I am soooooo glad that it's not some 1-cour or 2-cour show in which the story is raped to fit the schedule!
This is going to be one of my most favorite shows.

I wonder, if Space Brothers were to be aired in America, would the show reach enough people and even re-ignite the enthusiasm on space exploration?

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

This show would be still really good if it wasn't filled with so many fillers or slow-paced bullshit. I mean I'd settle for some more Serika-chan side-stories... but since the closed-quarters test, it's been pretty slow and boring. The latest exam felt rushed and pointless to me, it could've been much more interesting.
Not like I'll stop watching, it's pretty good but it failed to deliver for a while.

I've stalled out on this after... 28 episodes. I was waiting for it to finish up before I started again, but it doesn't look like that is happening anytime soon xD

I agree about the pacing. It has a very tedious pace. It's not painful, but it's close. I really enjoy the story and all of the characters though, so I'll stick with it til the end. If it ends.

Chapter 68 (latest) is pretty much equivalent to episode 35. What this means?

There is still a crapload of material to animate. Since there are 19 volumes released and chapter 68 is only in volume 7. I would love it if they just went all-out, but I'll understand if they need to take a break after 50+ eps. Though I am hoping they can animate it all in the end. It's just so good. Rare when you find an anime or manga where you practically like all characters. Even Nitta and Furuya. I wonder if the plan was to animate so many eps in the beginning.. I can't imagine this getting amazing ratings although it does have a broad appeal, I think.

It's also so damn inspiring. I'm honestly re-thinking my choice of education right now.
