No, they don't have to be homegrown, not for smaller countries anyway. What I meant is the peculiar thing where service rifle may even be made by the same company, but different countries use different models as their standard rifle. The cold war and AR vs AK dominance has long since passed. Today diversity is the keyword on small arms market and it's a wonder that we don't see even more diverse ammunition types as well.
