I also recommend those. I got my on amazon on sale for $90

I'd second datora's recommendation of getting a set of Sony headphones. I haven't used either of the ones he suggests, but up until very recently I was using a pair of MDR-X200s. They're very cheap (£19), the sound quality is acceptable (plenty good enough for many purposes, but nothing special), but they lasted me perfectly for 6 years or constant use. And I didn't buy them to begin with - I literally found them lying on the floor where someone had dropped them, and since I couldn't find the owner, just kept them for myself. So I have no idea how many years of use they've actually had.

I also recently bought a pair of MDR-XB300s (for £35). I can't comment on their durability, since I've only had them for a couple of months, but if they're anything like the rest of Sony's headphones, I'd bet on them lasting a good few years at least. The sound quality is excellent, and they have ridiculously good bass (though they obviously lack the power of a proper subwoofer, it's great for a pair of headphones). They'd be particularly good if you plan to listen to a lot of music with them. Their biggest downside I've found is that the cable is only 1.2m, which is too short for me - though it might be plenty for you.

What specs do you look for when picking a headset (with or without mic)? This is for listening to whatever you want during the night.

I've never really invested heavily in audio stuff so I can't really say anything specific about audio quality or features.

More mundane features though: comfort would be nice, I use them constantly. Between glasses and the length of time I spend with them on, it'd be nice to have a pair that doesn't hurt. Cord length: I'd be receptive to something like the suggested Sony headphones if they weren't so short. Doesn't have to be terribly long, but I'm not using them for portable devices, so something at least 5-6' long would be required.

I guess I wouldn't mind avoiding more complicated headsets. By that I mean headsets designed with a lot of moving parts in order to compact them. Haven't had very much luck with maintaining those. I don't really ever need to fold and put away a headset, and they've tended to end up breaking at the joints and whatnot more often than not.

Oh, lastly, as I mentioned earlier, I'm using Amazon credit to purchase the thing. So has to be available through Amazon.

Edit: probably drop looking for a mic, I don't use it all that much, and if it lets my dollar stretch a little further with sound quality I'm all for it. Currently looking at cheap Sennheisers. Most of the Sony ones I looked at all had the same 3.9' cable length, and that's just not enough.

HD202s are $21. HD203s are $40. Can't see myself going much higher from there, I definitely don't have the money for their higher end stuff and I'm not doing anything with them that I could see myself needing something that much more than that. Open to more suggestions though.

Assuming when you say headset, you mean headphone+microphone.

As of 4/16/12, it is $50.

The usb mixer isn't exactly for the computer so unless you enjoy the idle static sound when nothing is playing I'd suggest you pick up
