Intel Announces 'Centerton' To Compete With ARM Microserver CPUs

Intel just announced that it will launch "Centerton" in the second half of this year to complement its Xeon x86server processor lineup on the lower end.



Centerton will be a dual-core Atom 64-bit SoC with support for Intel's virtualization technology and ECC memory. According to the company, Centerton will carry a 6 watt TDP, less than one-third the power design of its lowest-power Xeon CPU (20 watt). Intel did not provide any further details, but Germany's Computerbase reported that the SoC will run at 1.6 GHz, support up to 8 GB DDR3-1333 memory and integrate eight PCIe 2.0 interfaces.

A reference design currently demonstrated, called "Dual Cove," shows Centerton in a dual-socket setup with four processing cores and 16 GB DDR3 memory.

Intel's pitch against ARM is the x86 design of Centerton, which offers application compatibility in existing environments and can be modeled into existing economy-of-scale scenarios.

Probably as slow as the single core 3GHz Xeons I am using now. The difference is that the Xeons use ~90W each... Another difference is that I got the entire 1U server (including a 10kRPM 73GB SATA drive) for ~170EUR...

If this goes real fast, fast enough to smoke the competition....
Or for kitamesume's sake.
If this goes real slow, but still fast enough to smoke the competition, looks like the future of HTPC is going to be bright and crazy.

I doubt this is for an HTPC but more for storage system, enterprise class NAS' and with the reference design showing two sockets maybe even entry level cloud boxes for vsphere and such. With no GPU on the dye I dont see it being for HTPC like the CE is
