Anyone else notice that Obama hasn't really been doing any campaigning? Sure, he's been taking a jab here and there, but he clearly hasn't gotten serious yet. Is he seriously going to wait until after Republican National Convention on August 27 before he kicks it into high gear? It feels like the convention is being held later this time around. That's only a little over two months before the actual vote on November 6. I'm eager to get this thing started! I guess I'll just have to wait. Looking back at the last election, things didn't really start to heat up until mid-July. For some strange reason, it feels like Obama v McCain was hard fought all year long, to the point that everyone was sick of it by the time it was all over. This time around it feels like the candidates are taking it easy.

@Semnae I think that's smart from Obama's part. The republicans don't need his help to loose the election. Why would he try to smear them and risk hurting himself while doing so?

And legalizing pot is just the obvious thing to do. If you can't ban it, might as well tax it.

What's all this about legalizing pot? I thought the first thing on the docket next year was immigration.

You see, if we legalize pot... all the drug cartels will have to go somewhere else to sell their drugs cause they would go out of business in a flash. Seeing as in THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA... (aka the US capital) has it legalized to the point where it can be used medically... why not allow everyone to buy into it.

Economics 101... the reason we are in a recession is because the middle class doesn't spend money. When the middle class doesn't spend money, the economy gets stagnate. Legalize pot, BAME... 30-50% of the lower/middle class people ages 21-35 (which is about 60 million people, so 20-30 million people) will pay $20 a week for pot. That's $219 BILLION dollars spent. Tax at a rate of 25-50% and we got a lot of revenue coming into the federal government.

But you know... we have idiots as politicians. They can't even do math let alone know that prohibitions cost the government more in tax dollars.

Netherlands proved already that legalizing weed doesn't increase it's usage significantly thanks to the social element. Not all people want to be shunned publicly just because of some weed.

Also what's with the immigrant issue? More or less immigrants?

Well, the Republican issue seems to be that "they exist." Not entirely sure where the Democrats stand, though I'd hope it'd be towards making naturalization smoother.

I think it's a bit disingenuous an issue. The Republican angle unquestionably plays on racial fears. But is that really the problem? Isn't it people hiring an illegal workforce in the first place?

Sorta related, there was a recent Daily Show segment about the ban in Arizona on Mexican-American Studies courses (and ONLY Mexician-American Studies.)

You can find it here: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-april-2-2012/tucson-s-mexican-american-studies-ban

Think they're blocked outside the US, so apologies in advance if anyone can't play it.

The grass is green, the sky is blue, and Arizona is run by racist morons. Such is life.

I thought that the 2012 general election campaigning started on November 4th 2008, and the 2016 election started a few weeks ago.

Obama commercials have been airing in VA for a couple months now and I've seen his banner ads on a few websites. Beyond that, I've gotten the spam emails for a few weeks. Sem, when are you going to realize he doesn't campaign in Texas? He has zero shot of winning that state.

That wasn't illegally employing a person without a residence authorisation. That was good christian charity for a poor soul in need of financial help!

So you define Obama's campaign starting when he runs an attack ad? This is hardly the first we've seen in Virginia, either.

Side note - anyone else notice how young Mittens looks in that photo? I know it was taken 20 years ago and it should be expected but... damn. Mittens got old.

Ah! The good old slander and attack in ads. A clear sign of a weak and pathetic leader throwing cheap jabs at everyone else. How long has it been since a leader in Western countries would show his own merit instead of digging in other's shit?

Worst thing is that they aren't even smart or funny about it so instead of trolling, they just look butthurt like some local prison bitch.

His self-promoting commercials have been even worse so far. They are, literally, cutscenes from his last election and buzz words like "change" and "we did it". Nothing of substance at all.

Trust me. I'm just as disgusted as you but what can we do about it? Smear campaigns work especially in a two-party system. Of course politicians are gonna use it.
