got crappy equipment? 20$ headphones? onboard legacy soundcard? MP3 it is.
got professional equipment? 500$ headphones? never-ending hunger for top-of-the-line quality? FLAC it is.

^ That's the whole thread, really. I want to put it in very light words so I don't offend anyone - Don't say stuff like this:
--- Quote from: AceD on April 28, 2012, 06:14:14 PM ---For music....320kbps MP3, its highly compatible and sounds great. I cannot tell any difference between that and flac....and in all likeliness anybody who says they can is full of shit.

What song did you listen to? Formats? What sound card do you have (NOT your motherboard's)? What speakers or headphones are you using?! If speakers, what wires/cables are you using? ... Those who own good hardware and the format is converted from an original piece to FLAC will notice the difference in quality to those that were converted to MP3.

Sound blaster fata1ity pro, usually my gaming headset...Logitech G35. It's like 720p and 1080p anime....i cannot see any difference unless the 720p is bitrate starved/fucked in some way. Or maybe it's just the fact am not picky enough to notice such small differences to begin with.
In anime, i do prefer AAC over flac again....

^This. I pity those people who buy and brag their Dr. Dre beats or similar then don't have any idea about lossless audio.

I put it in the spoiler for obvious reasons.
And here we go again. I'm done here so you guys can continue arguing how your need to use FLAC to justify your oh so expensive audio hardware purchases.

If you're planning to listen to it with your Galaxy S2, then I would definitely consider using .ogg instead of .mp3 (I know I mentioned it before, but it's worth reiterating). Android is very, very good at handling ogg files out of the box - it treats them basically the same as mp3 - so there's no reason not to use it. Unless your collection is entirely mp3 already anyway, in which case I can understand not bothering to change it unless you're running out of space.
Basically, as said, you're not going to hear any difference between ogg and mp3 as such, but the compression used by the ogg format is significantly better, so tracks will take up literally half as much space, or less, at the same quality level.
If you're planning to re-encode any of your music to mp3, you may as well just encode it as ogg instead. If your music is in mp3 format already anyway though, then there's probably not too much point in going to the effort of reencoding unless you need the space.

.mp3 needs to stop being such a dominant force. It's subpar at best, but yet everyone uses it so unless you plan on converting everything you have to, which is a pain.
