This series has always had such potential but I must say it just doesn't grip me the way I wanted it to. I'll certainly give this a shot though.

Well, a mixed bag that is DtD. Personally didn't enjoy second season too much, and really only the OVAs and parts of the first season.

I actually enjoyed the 2nd season better than the first. Liked the OVAs too. I'll be looking forward to watching the new season.

Watching the OVA series before second season would prepare you to understand the story better but it spoils quite a bit. I recommend watching the OVA series after second season, to have important explanations given to you.
It's my recommendation, but do what you want.
