Build Your Computer
« on: May 07, 2012, 06:56:50 PM »
Few things to keep in mind:

* You can build any-type of computer for personal, gaming, multi-task, server-use, etc.
* Keep the URL link to the side of the part model name, or within the model name.
* You either do an only-computer build (necessary parts to power a computer), or a full setup computer build (with mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers, etc).
* It would be nice to just give us your budget view on the computer set up.
* Have fun. :P

Type: Computer-only for a young gamer
Budget: 620 dollars

CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I32100
Motherboard: ASUS P8H61-M LX PLUS (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL
PSU: CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 V2 600W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
GPU: EVGA 01G-P3-1556-KR GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) FPB 1GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
Case: NZXT Apollo Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Whenever I try to make a simple computer for personal use, I end up making it more for a gamer ... lol.

Type: Usual gamer who lives in Sweden

Case: BitFenix Merc Beta Black (345 sek)
GPU: Geforce GTX 580 1536M (2523 sek with SC discount)
CPU: Intel i5 2500K (1662 sek with discount)
MB: Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 (802 sek with discount)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200rpm 64MB SATA-3 (990 sek with discount)
RAM: Corsair 8GB (KIT) DDR3 1600MHz/CL9/VENGEANCE-BLUE/1,5V (399 sek with discount)
PSU: Cooler Master GX 550W 80+ Bronze (596 sek)

345+2523+1662+802+990+399+596 = 7317 sek (Shipping not included)
7317 sek equals $1073

Take into account that everything is about ~35% more expensive in Sweden than in the USA. I had to look pretty hard to find these deals.

Forgot the monitor: ACHIEVA Shimian QH270-IPSB 2560x1440 27" ($344)

Since the Geforce 520 can barely even boot modern games, and the 530 is comparable to the 7900 series, the latter 3 are essentially useless builds for gaming. It may just be me, but all of them seem greatly overpriced.

And, I think the topic was to "build a computer" yourself, not choose between existing builds and asking for advice on which one to buy.

You sure this won't end up going to games?
Do you mean the thread? Then, set up a build which is not related to games ;]

Wait, now I'm confused. Do you mean that we shall build any type of computer we like, or that we should build a single computer which will be used for everything? If any computer that we like; I only said "Then, set up a build which is not related to games ;]" as Vuzedome questioned this thread's survivability (not turning into a games-only thread) without contributing on his/her own :]

I've pointed out the general objective for this thread, then I pointed out my personal opinion at the very bottom. It's not confusing if you look at them both.

Oh, I thought you pointed out the hyphen, and meant that we should build an "any-type" (a computer which is any type at once, I guess), but now I see that it was just a small typographical error. :]
Please do correct me if I am way off and actually need the sleep I have been missing out on the last 24 hours.

Ah I see. Okay.

Let's move on. I want to see who can build a working computer for personal use for 300 dollars or less, and one for gaming for 400 dollars or less.

^ i could, but i'd be going with a bunch of generic stuffs...

notes : i doubt you'd need any ODD to use the PC, installing the OS could be done through USB =p so i'm skipping the odd.
i couuuld drop the price points even further, since im using a WD black and such but then again i might just risk having failing parts >,>

Let's move on. I want to see who can build a working computer for personal use for 300 dollars or less, and one for gaming for 400 dollars or less.

Challenge accepted. At least, for the personal use one. This is a possible build I came up with for a coworker looking for casual use - mostly surfing and video streaming. A lot of the stuff is from Memory Express since we have stores in town.

Mobo + CPU: Foxconn D270S Intel Atom D2700 Intel NM10 Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo - $90
RAM: G.Skill 4GB PC3-10666 SODIMM for Notebooks - $22
HDD: Western Digital 500GB Caviar Black 7200rpm SATA III w/ 32MB Cache - $90
Case: Silverstone SG05BB-450 Mini iTX Case w/ 450W Power Supply - $120
DVD: LG SuperMulti 24x DVD Writer, SATA, OEM, Black - $18

Total $340 plus tax. Not too shabby. Could probably drop the Black for a Blue or another brand to drop that HDD price, as well as a different case to drop that case price. My selection of cases was pretty limited (only looked at mini ITX but most regular micro ATX/ATX cases should be fine) and Blacks would be best for boot drives, so it'd be a bit of a performance sacrifice.

For example, using the Silverstone ML03B mATX HTPC Case, Black ($60) instead would already drop the total to $280 without having to touch the HDD.

^ theres a LGA1155 foxconn itx for 49.99$ in newegg, if you pair that up with the celeron i used you'd be running at around 10$ more over the atom with a lot more performance, so slight video editing and photoshops isn't so farfetched anymore =P
the power consumption difference isn't too much between the two.

I'm seeing a lot of awesome different builds. Pretty cheap too.

So say we discard the case and go with an aquarium filled with oil. How much would that cost compared to a case?

car oil would cost about 200$ to fill a small tank i guess, not a good idea imho since oil is a poor conductor of heat.

the best way to make an ultra silent rig would be to buy a box case with a top grill, fit in an oversized heatsink and remove all the fans, i guess noctua's D14 would work well with this plan.
at worst you'd be hovering at about 70c during peak continuous loads.

or, you could leave one 14cm fan in the front as an intake. noctua's fans have jumpers for >900rpm, resulting in >11dba.

Edit: btw, don't use cooking oil or veggy oil, they get moldy after a few months of being stagnant while exposed to air. i dunno about baby oil, but engine oil should work since those were made to work with mechanical equipments under heat.
also, moving components like fans have an extremely high chance of self-destructing if submerged in oil, the oil is too thick for the rotors to handle them. HDDs could fail as well if the oil gets inside chambers and soaks the platters.

Why not just make a whole case out of aluminium/copper and connect it to the heatsink. By extension creating a huge ass heat sink?

you can't transfer a huge amount of heat from a larger spot onto a smaller spot with the same speed as transferring to an equally large spot, you'll need a really thick case if you want to do that. i.e. you can't drain a large water tank through a thin hose as fast as a large hose.

the effective way to make a passive setup is use the natural tendencies of air to rise up when heated, so putting a vent at the top and a vent at the bottom would mean a passive intake at the bottom and an exhaust at the top.

Celeron still uses more power, so in the end it costs more both in the short term and long term.

And you can knock $10 off that "cheapest rig evar" by going with the Atom. =P

Why not just make a whole case out of aluminium/copper and connect it to the heatsink. By extension creating a huge ass heat sink?

Sounds expensive. And if you plan to run it for extended periods of time, you'd need a ton of fans, since the heat will spread evenly throughout the case, meaning heat can't be dissipated as efficiently with only your normal case fans.
