Author Topic: Transferring MP3 to iPod? (Read 630 times)

Okay, i just got my iPod back and it turns out that all the MP3's and Videos are gone

I don't have iTunes on this computer (Installing iTunes will take the better part of an hour), but i've heard that iOS5 doesn't need iTunes anymore but i can't figure out how to do it.

How do you upload MP3's into the iPods internal MP3 storage without using third party apps? I've tried googling but so far i only get hits about using other third party apps and the rest are dated 2010.

you get iTunes
and thats the only way around it. . .

or some other third party software, forget about drag-n-drop

iPods have the iTunes library in some sort of encode so that people cant just snatch the songs away by plugging ipods into different computers (third party software also fixes this

)

what os are you using? Im assuming one of the shitty apple ones since you mention it in your post.
If you are using ashitty apple one i have no clue

windows or linux one of various mediaplayers like winamp or mediamonkey do the job

Nope, i'm on Windows7.

Every time i get into an iTunes debate, they keep pointing out that you don't need iTunes anymore. Well, here's their chance to prove it.

If it's about third party programs, those had been around since iOS came out, so i don't think that's an iOS5 feature.

No third party programs, no cables. From the claims they keep repeating, i should be able to do this on the iPod too. So how do i do it? And no, storage apps don't count, i've already tried it and the MP3's i upload there don't show up on the iPods music player.

BTW, my Transformer and Ace show up on WindowsMediaPlayer, the iPod doesn't.

iTunes for simplicity, if you want to get into which is better, I dunno, but I know that Winamp does it too.
And what kind of iPod are you talking about here?

It's also possible to straight up drag and drop files. I wouldn't suggest it though, it sometimes rejects it and freaks the fuck out.

is why i hate apple, really, who needs complications when a regular mp3 player can be plugged --> copy+paste --> play.

Because in some places, Canada included, finding a good alternative is difficult and usually costly.

Thus, market shares grows in that particular arena.

iTunes is hardly convenient. In the time it takes for itunes to open i'd have already finished transferring to android (See earlier video). If the apple guys had just been blowing hot air, this thing's going back into the closet.

Ok it should not take that long (as seen in your video) to open iTunes. Even if my HD is idle it doesn't take longer than 30 second to open.

As far as I know, there is the iCloud storage which you can store your music online and transfer files between it and your apple products ... but I think this may only apply to items purchase in iTunes. I don't use it so I can't say for sure it would store files you have gotten thru other means and you may still need to have iTunes on your computer.

A few more guys told me that it loads like that on their PC's as well. I have an I5-750 quad core (and a few more laptops), and each one i tried it on loaded just as slowly, i'm guessing it doesn't like my network, tho i'm not really sure why it has to care about that when i just want to interact with a local device. Dragging multiple files into it was a pain as well, it's like when you hover a file over it, the pc freezes as if it's scanning the files you haven't even dropped yet, the more you drag at once, the longer it freezes. If you drop it before it finishes scanning/unfreezes it won't get accepted and you'll have to pick it up again. The UI itself, takes several seconds to change screens when you're navigating it. This means it takes forever if you're updating your media files on multiple apps.

On the android, like i showed in the first video, you go to the folders, and start dropping your files into it. This was the point i was making during the arguments, and it's supposed to be countered in iOS5.

TBH I have tried zunes, iPods and generic mp3s, and I do like iPods way better, WAY better, obviously they are more pricey but hey, you pay for what you get. . .I ran through 3 generics in a year, after X time, boom they dont play anything anymore and they just become a storage drive. . .

iTunes, at least compared to Windows Media Player is way WAY WAY better, I havent used winamp enough to actually have a decision comparing both, but since im happy with iTunes, theres no need to try it.

BTW, what I do is open iTunes when I boot my computer and I dont close it ever, I just minimize it, and you can download the remote app fro the ipod touch and control itunes and your PC media from the ipod (works great to start up your day with music before you get out of bed)

I use a creative Zen Vision: M. Plays everything, no problems with converting (as it doesn't need to), and it's pretty much the exact same build as an iPod as well. 6 years old and still going. I also prefer WMP to iTunes though so eh. WMP does what I want it to (play the damn music file) and runs a lot quicker. Sure, there's arguments for Mediamonkey and Foobar but I never saw the need to get used to a different program when the one I have works fine (it probably helps that Creative is a subsidiary of MS too, so the two work well together).

I do get the point about storage though, there aren't many decent HDD based MP3 players around any more and flash drives still aren't big enough to hold my music collection (and screw only loading half of it on there). I'm not convinced the Archos are any more reliable than the iPod from what I've read, and if you use an iPod you pretty much have to use iTunes... *shrugs* The day I buy an apple product is the day I give everyone permission to slap me around the face. Never liked them, never will.

I don't get that behavior on my P4 3.0GHz with HT, 4GB DDR2, 250GB SATA, XP Home. Takes 20 seconds max to open iTunes on a fresh boot (closer to 10 seconds average). I think you may have other underlying issues you should pay attention to.

I did troubleshoot, and like i said, it doesn't like my network. iTunes is just badly programmed, with too many outside dependencies. Surprising considering windows programs are known to hook into everything, yet Apples way of programming breaks even that.

Too many Apple apologists keep blaming the user, ignoring the fact that every other media utility works. You basically want the user to setup his system, 'the apple way', for an iPod. We don't want our lifestyle to revolve around a gadget, we want the gadget to fit into our habits. My file systems, network, media servers, i've set them up around my OS (Windows), i have an easier time integrating the Android phone and Tablet into it than the iPod.

The ability to use the iPod without iTunes was what the Apple apologists were touting on iOS5, i am asking how to do that.

Because this is a chance for them to prove it, to an Apple critic that actually has an iOS device. Android lets you move files without going through iTunes via USB, SD/microSD card, Wifi, etc without third party programs or rooting. And the Apple sides counter is that you don't need iTunes anymore. Please, show how it's done.

As for the iPod, i've been lending it because i so rarely use it that i often find it with the battery dead. The ability to transfer files on Android without third party programs makes it easier to cycle files through it, and why a few Archos owners (The ones that actually do use their tablets for media consumption), ended up not touching their iPads for weeks at a time despite the Archos's build quality being inferior (connectivity won them over). Getting their media files into an Android device is just easier. I'm keeping the iPod so i can keep checking which of the two is easier to use from a heavy media consumers perspective. If the time comes that it does let me use it without jumping through hoops, i'll get an iPad.

So how do you do it without third party programs like iTunes?
